Tracking intense heat and humidity
High intensity heat and humidity will once again make headlines across the Central Plains late this week and into the weekend as temperatures rise across the region. A Heat Advisory has been issued for all of Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas Friday, August 15 and Saturday, August 16 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Heat index values are forecast to reach 100 to 106 degrees through the advisory period, increasing the risk for heat related illness.
Mostly sunny skies and upper 80s Thursday afternoon will give way to a warm and dry night as lows fall into the 70s after sunset with southerly winds at 5 to 10 mph. Aside from a few passing clouds and a 20% chance of stray t-storms near the Iowa border Friday afternoon, sunshine and heat will prevail for the final day of the work week. Afternoon highs Friday will rise well into the 90s, with southerly winds pumping in hot and humid air. Heat index values will top out in the triple digits Friday afternoon. A repeat performance is in store for Saturday with another round of sunshine, 90s, and oppressive heat indices. Similar conditions are forecast to persist Sunday, potentially resulting in an extension of heat alerts through the entire weekend.
