Tracking a strong spring storm system

A potent spring storm system will track across the Mid-Missouri River Valley Tuesday and Wednesday, posing a risk for isolated severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, high winds, and a period of accumulating snowfall.

The National Weather Service has issued multiple alerts across Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas ahead of the approaching system.

A High Wind Watch will go into effect from 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, until noon Wednesday, March 5 for all of Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas along and east of the Interstate 35 corridor. Sustained winds between 25 and 40 mph are expected through the period, with winds gusting up to 55 mph.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for the following counties:  Andrew, Atchison (KS), Atchison (MO), Buchanan, Doniphan, Gentry, Holt, Nodaway, Worth from 9 p.m. Tuesday until 9 a.m. Wednesday. Light snow accumulations of up to 2 inches are expected across the watch area. Gusty winds and brief periods of heavy snow could result in whiteout conditions early Wednesday morning.

Widespread showers and embedded thunderstorms are anticipated to develop early Tuesday morning and continue through much of the day. A few storms may contain high winds and small hail. Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are forecast across Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas before cold air results in a changeover to snow late Tuesday night through Wednesday morning.
