The good ol’ days

By Corner Post

Old age is always at least an arm’s length away, isn’t it? Before I was a teenager, 30-year-olds were “old.” By the time I graduated from high school, that mark had pushed back by 15 years or so. When I crossed into my third decade of life, I wasn’t old, that was still 20+ years away. Magically, as I walked toward it, the line moved away! It still does today — but I do seem to be gaining on it!

I think identifying “the good ol’ days” people talk about is a lot like pinpointing the start of old age. The idyllic times came to a close, in most people’s minds, about the time their childhoods ended. Date ranges shift and slide to coincide with the youthful days of those involved in the discussion. All of us, regardless of the time and place we lived as children, tend to remember the best of what we had and overlook many hardships.

When you think of the good ol’ days, to what decade do you associate that honor, and why? We want your input. Send your thoughts to us at The Corner Post, 825 Edmond Street, St. Joseph, Missouri 64501, or email us at cornerpost@newspressnow.com.
