A high-rise landlord

Imagine a landlord whose high-rise dwellings include well over 100 one-bedroom apartments. Even with so many residences, demand exceeds supply, so prospective occupants jostle to be listed among his elite clientele. Most of his tenants have racked up many frequent flyer miles, vacationing in Brazil each winter. If your mind pictures New York City, Chicago, Seattle or another large metropolis you would be forgiven. Think of a more bucolic setting on a county lane, surrounded by lush pastures, fruit trees and gardens. Think of Jamesport, Missouri.
Ivan Ray is the landlord. Hundreds of Purple Martins travel thousands of miles just to spend time at his place each year. While they are there, a new generation is born and in those fledglings is an instinctive desire to return to Jamesport from South America each spring.
“They are fascinating birds,” Miller says. There is so much to enjoy about them. For instance, these birds tend to return to the previous year’s nesting site when conditions are favorable. So, if the housing and surrounding environment is attractive to this year’s occupants, you’re likely to see them again next year. They spend winter months in South America, an annual migration of 5000 to 7000 miles! Purple Martins quickly become accustomed to humans, and so interaction with them is much easier than with most other wild birds.
Because Purple Martins usually snatch meals in the air, flying insects make up the bulk of their diet. But when hungry martins are swarming, some martin enthusiasts toss crickets, mealworms and even bits of scrambled eggs into the air to provide supplemental nutrition. Apparently, the acrobatic birds quickly learn to catch these to-go orders, and they seem to like them very much.
Do you know how to attract Purple Martins to your place? Would you, your children or grandchildren like to see a nest, eggs and baby birds up close? Care to learn more about the benefits of Purple Martins in your neighborhood? Would you enjoy a trip to Jamesport to take in scenic sights, sample some Amish delicacies and handicrafts, and shop for garden items, whole foods and antiques? Mark Saturday, June 7 on your calendar. Mr. Ivan Ray will host his 20th annual Purple Martin Open House from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The address is 22885 340th Street, Jamesport, Missouri 64648. Refreshments will be served.
