Saturday afternoon at Looney Arena turned out to be a memorable day in MIAA women’s basketball history.

Missouri Western women’s basketball’s 147-16 victory over Kansas Christian out of the Christmas break went down as the most points scored in a single game by an MIAA program ever.

Not only did the Griffon women break the single-game scoring record with 147 points, but they also broke six other MIAA records in the process of their dismantling of the Falcons.

Among the other records broken were most points in a quarter with 42, most points in a half with 81, fewest points allowed in a game with 16, most assists with 45, margin of victory at 131 and field goals made with 60.

Everyone on Western got a piece of the pie in the win. For players such as sophomore Meredith Rieker and freshman Kelsey Johnson who don’t see the floor a ton in most games, they made the most of their increase in playing time on Saturday. Both players finished with career highs. Rieker finished with 22 points and the former Benton Cardinal Johnson finished with 18 points on five three-point field goals made.

The seven MIAA records broken were also program records for Western on top of two other program records broken with three pointers made with 20 and field goals attempted at 102.

Western women head into the New Year with a 9-3 and will step right back into conference play this week with a two-game road trip to Oklahoma with Rogers State on Thursday and then Northeastern State on Saturday.
