PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Carlos E. Moya, MD., age 87, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was born in Quipile, Cundinamarca, Colombia, a son of Juan de Jesus and María Silva.

In 1965, Carlos graduated from Universidad Nacional de Colombia with a degree in Medicine. He performed his rural year service in Mitú, Vaupes, Colombia. He arrived in the United States in 1969 and started his Anatomical and Clinical Pathology residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

He worked as a Pathologist at Fairmont General Hospital, Fairmont, West Virginia from 1973 to 1976. From 1977 to 1980 he was an Assistant Professor of Pathology and the Director of the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory at West Virginia University.

In 1980, he transitioned to a position as the Director of the Pathology Department at Mosaic Health Care System, in St. Joseph, where he worked until retirement.

Carlos’ guiding principles of fairness, education, and extending a helping hand to those in need was the core of all he did. He believed in always treating others as he would want to be treated and consistently worked for the underdog. Along with his wife, Carol, he opened his home to international students and helped many young people learn English and experience daily life in the U.S.

Upon retirement Carlos devoted himself to volunteer work in the community and overseas, establishing basic medical laboratory testing services in St. Lucia (Caribbean) and Pinalejo and San Francisco de La Paz (Honduras). Carlos had an eye for photography and enjoyed gardening. An avid reader, Carlos considered libraries “the great equalizer” because they offered access to knowledge and knowledge is power.

Carlos is survived by his treasured wife of 51 years, Carol Mutschler Moya.

His family in Colombia includes Juan de Jesus (Nilsa Rey), Jorge Enrique Moya (Marlene Niño), and Álvaro Moya (Consuelo); his sister, Maria Ines Moya; and sister-in-law, Aura Rojas (Luis Hernando, deceased); as well as many nieces and nephews
