Compared to last week, steers and heifers sold uneven; 3.00 lower to 3.00 higher.
Demand was moderate to good. The shortened holiday week had many of the early week sales closed. With cooler temperatures rolling in, buyers are going to be calculating health risks involved with unweaned or unvaccinated calves. In addition to the shortened week, minds are starting to focus on harvest season.
Live Cattle October contract closed the week 3.425 lower at 175.175, and December contract 2.850 lower at 174.7. Feeder Cattle September contract closed the week 6.175 lower at 234.3, and October contract 6.8 lower at 230.95.
Live sales of negotiated cash fed cattle trade in the Southern Plains sold 1.00 to 2.00 lower at 181.00. In Nebraska, live sales sold 4.00 lower at 180.00, while the dressed sales sold steady to 4.00 lower at 288.00.
Choice boxed beef closed the week 0.07 higher at 309.41 while Select was 0.30 higher at 296.12 for the same period.
Weekly Cattle Slaughter under federal inspection estimated at 542K, 69K less than last week and 17K less than a year ago.
Auction volume this week included 61% weighing over 600 lbs and 42% heifers.
