US TRUMPS-TARIFFS-SOYBEAN FARMERS

DESCRIPTION: Minnesota farmer Dan Glessing isn’t ready to get too upset over President Donald Trump’s trade wars. While farm country voted heavily for Trump last November, Glessing and many other farmers have taken a wait-and-see attitude toward the president’s disputes with China and other international markets for their crops. Monday’s announcement of a 90-day truce between the U.S. and China backs up their reluctance to hit the panic button.

US–MISSOURI-HOME EXPLOSION

Missouri’s attorney general has sued a utility over an explosion of a home that killed a 5-year-old

SUMMARY: Missouri’s attorney general has sued a natural gas company over the explosion of a home in a small town that killed a 5-year-old boy. The lawsuit filed Monday by Attorney General Andrew Bailey in Lafayette County accuses Liberty Utilities of violating a state safety law. The April 9 explosion destroyed a home in Lexington, about 55 miles east of Kansas City. Federal investigators said in a preliminary report last week that a Liberty employee failed to mark a section of a gas line before another company drilled into it while installing a fiber optic cable. The utility said it is working with authorities on finding the explosion’s cause.

US–PESTICIDES-LIABILITY PROTECTION

Georgia becomes second US state to shield maker of Roundup weed killer from some cancer claims

SUMMARY: Georgia has become the second state to provide a legal protections to the manufacturer of a popular weed killer. Legislation signed by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp says pesticide makers can’t be sued for failing to warn customers of dangers if they use labels approved by federal regulators. The bill is backed by agrochemical giant Bayer, the maker of Roundup weed killer. Bayer has been hit with 181,000 claims alleging that Roundup’s key ingredient glyphosate causes non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Bayer disputes those claims. The Environmental Protection Agency has said it’s not likely to be carcinogenic to humans when used as directed. North Dakota enacted a similar law earlier this year.

US–CONGRESS-TAX CUTS

House Republicans unveil Medicaid cuts that Democrats warn will leave millions without care

SUMMARY: House Republicans have unveiled the cost-saving centerpiece of President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill.” The legislation tallies hundreds of pages and involves at least $880 billion in cuts largely to Medicaid, the nation’s health care program for more than 70 million Americans. The savings are needed to help cover the cost of $4.5 trillion in tax breaks. But it’s setting off the biggest political fight over health care since Republicans tried but failed to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act during Trump’s first term. Democrats warn millions of Americans will lose coverage. And one Republican, Sen. Josh Hawley, warned his colleagues in an op-ed Monday that cutting health care to pay for tax breaks would be “morally wrong and politically suicidal.”
