US measles case count climbs slightly to 1,046 cases, while Indiana’s outbreak ends
SUMMARY: The U.S. is up to 1,046 confirmed measles cases. Texas added 10 cases in the past week, further signaling slowing of the nation’s largest outbreak. Two elementary school-aged children and an adult have died from measles-related illnesses this year. Other states with active outbreaks include Michigan, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. Indiana said its outbreak is over. Measles is caused by a highly contagious virus that’s airborne. It is preventable through vaccines, and has been considered eliminated from the U.S. since 2000.

Kansas community holds private memorial for Israeli Embassy staffer killed in DC ambush
SUMMARY: Family and friends of one of the Israeli Embassy staffers fatally shot in Washington, D.C., last week have gathered for her funeral in the Kansas community where she grew up. The private funeral for 26-year-old Sarah Milgrim is being held at Congregation Beth Torah in Overland Park, Kansas. It’s the temple she attended through high school with her family. Milgrim was leaving a reception for young diplomats at the Capital Jewish Museum alongside 30-year-old Yaron Lischinsky on May 21 when they were shot to death. Lischinsky had bought an engagement ring before the shooting and was planning to propose to Milgrim in the coming days.

Escape of ex-police chief known as ‘Devil in the Ozarks’ has Arkansas residents on edge
SUMMARY: Authorities are searching Arkansas’ rugged Ozark Mountains for a former police chief and convicted killer who escaped from prison this weekend. The sister of one of his victims is on edge. Cheryl Tillman’s brother was killed by Grant Hardin. She told The Associated Press that said she and other relatives are worried since they were witnesses in his court proceedings. Hardin is the former police chief in the small town of Gateway near the Arkansas-Missouri border. He was serving lengthy sentences for murder and rape and became known as the “Devil in the Ozarks.” Prison officials say he escaped from prison Sunday in Calico Rock.
