White House overhaul of troubled US air traffic control system will cost ‘lots of billions’
SUMMARY: The Trump administration has proposed a multibillion-dollar overhaul of the U.S. air traffic control system in the wake of recent deadly plane crashes and technical failures that have put a spotlight on the outdated network. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says the plan calls for six new air traffic control centers, along with technology and communications upgrades at all of the nation’s air traffic facilities over the next three years. How much it will all cost wasn’t immediately revealed. Officials want to add fiber, wireless and satellite technology at more than 4,600 locations, replace 618 radars and increase the number of airports with systems designed to reduce near misses on runways.

It was developed after the deadly midair collision over Washington, D.C., in January. Officials have not provided an exact cost estimate but said it would require billions of dollars. But they say a $12.5 billion budget proposal that a House committee drafted last week represents a solid “down payment” on the plan. The proposal calls for installing 4,600 new high-speed internet connections and replacing 618 radars and 25,000 radios. Two hundred new ground location systems would be installed at airports nationwide.

Measles is caused by a highly contagious virus that’s airborne and spreads easily when an infected person breathes, sneezes or coughs. It is prevented by vaccines. Cases also have been reported in 19 states.
