US–AVIATION SAFETY

White House overhaul of troubled US air traffic control system will cost ‘lots of billions’

SUMMARY: The Trump administration has proposed a multibillion-dollar overhaul of the U.S. air traffic control system in the wake of recent deadly plane crashes and technical failures that have put a spotlight on the outdated network. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says the plan calls for six new air traffic control centers, along with technology and communications upgrades at all of the nation’s air traffic facilities over the next three years. How much it will all cost wasn’t immediately revealed. Officials want to add fiber, wireless and satellite technology at more than 4,600 locations, replace 618 radars and increase the number of airports with systems designed to reduce near misses on runways.

US–AVIATION SAFETY-BY THE NUMBERS

Officials plan to revamp the US air traffic control system. Here’s a breakdown by the numbers

SUMMARY: The Trump administration has announced an ambitious three-year plan to replace the nation’s aging air traffic control system. It was developed after the deadly midair collision over Washington, D.C., in January. Officials have not provided an exact cost estimate but said it would require billions of dollars. But they say a $12.5 billion budget proposal that a House committee drafted last week represents a solid “down payment” on the plan. The proposal calls for installing 4,600 new high-speed internet connections and replacing 618 radars and 25,000 radios. Two hundred new ground location systems would be installed at airports nationwide.

US–MEASLES OUTBREAK-EXPLAINER

North Dakota is 11th US state with a measles outbreak. Here’s what to know

SUMMARY: North Dakota is the 11th state in the U.S. with a measles outbreak. The U.S. has 935 confirmed measles cases this year. That’s triple the amount seen in all of 2024. Two children and an adult have died from measles-related illnesses this year. Ten other states have active outbreaks: Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas. Measles is caused by a highly contagious virus that’s airborne and spreads easily when an infected person breathes, sneezes or coughs. It is prevented by vaccines. Cases also have been reported in 19 states.

US–RACIST PLAYGROUND VIDEO-VIRAL FUNDRAISER

A woman who called a Black child a slur has raised a backlash but also thousands of dollars

SUMMARY: A video showing a Minnesota woman at a playground admitting to using a racist slur against a Black child has garnered millions of views. But what’s been equally appalling for some is that the Rochester woman has amassed $700,000 online for relocation expenses after saying she and her family have been harassed. The local NAACP, in turn, drew over $340,000 for a 5-year-old boy. The flurry of monetary contributions has reignited debates, such as whether racist language and attacks are becoming more permissible. Experts say this reaction is evidence of people being more open about racist beliefs and wanting to hit back at so-called cancel culture.
