Football weekend primer

By NewsPress Now

Central v. Excelsior Springs

It’s been a rough last four weeks for Central. The Indians started the season 3-0, but have lost their last four games. However, they find themselves in an advantageous position hosting a 2-5 Excelsior team. Central has won the last two matchups with the Tigers.

St. Joseph Christian @ Princeton

The Lions have shaken off the woes of a rough September by winning their last two games. Christian will travel to 2-5 Princeton, a high-scoring team in the middle of a two-game skid.

Bishop LeBlond @ Greenfield (Saturday)

The 8-man football schedule can be kind to independent teams like the Golden Eagles. LeBlond got a bye week last week, and will hit the road for a Saturday afternoon contest with Greenfield. The two teams have played each other the last two seasons, both of which went to the Golden Eagles.

Lafayette @ St. Pius X

St. Pius has steamrolled nearly every one of its opponents this season, winning by an averaging of nearly 49 points per game in its wins. The Fighting Irish will look to be the team to finally knock off the Warriors, who are currently riding a six-game win streak and have established themselves as one of the top teams in Class 5.

Benton v. Cameron

Two 1-6 teams will clash at Sparks Field. Two young coaches in Corey Bertini and Wes Bell will look to get their teams momentum heading into the district tournaments that are just two weeks away.

Savannah v. Maryville

The stout defense of the Savages, allowing less than six points per game to their opponents, will look to stymie a Maryville squad that doesn’t put up much on the scoreboard. The Spoofhounds average just 27 points per game, a very low total for a normally robust Maryville offense.

Mid-Buchanan v. Penney

The Dragons are the only team in the area still undefeated. If Mid-Buchanan manages to escape a scrappy Penney team, it’ll set up a compelling matchup in the final week of the regular season when the Dragons face rival East Buchanan.

East Buchanan @ Maysville

The Bulldogs have won their last five games, whereas the Wolverines are still seeking their first win of the season. Maysville is 0-7 and has four games where it’s failed to reach double digits.

Riverside @ Doniphan West

Riverside got over the hump by beating their cross-county rival in Troy last week in a low-scoring affair. The Cyclones continue to roll and take their five-game win streak to Doniphan West. The Mustangs have lost four in a row, failing to score more than 14 points in any of those losses.
