US–JUSTICE DEPARTMENT-POLICE REFORM

Justice Department moves to cancel police reform settlements reached with Minneapolis and Louisville

SUMMARY: The Justice Department has moved to cancel settlements with Minneapolis and Louisville, Kentucky, that called for an overhaul of policing following the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. The department announced the steps Wednesday. Minneapolis in January approved a consent decree with the federal government in the final days of the Biden administration to overhaul its training and use-of-force policies under court supervision. The agreement required approval from a federal court. But the Trump administration told the court it doesn’t intend to proceed. The administration also announced it’s retracting the findings of Justice Department investigations into six other police departments that the Biden administration had accused of civil rights violations.

US–PHONES-IN-SCHOOL

Majority of US states now have laws banning or regulating cellphones in schools, with more to follow

SUMMARY: More than half of U.S. states now have laws banning or regulating cellphones in schools, with more likely to follow. Florida was the first state to pass a law regulating use of cellphones in schools in 2023. Alaska and Nebraska became the 25th and 26th on Tuesday. Bills have sprinted through legislatures this year in states from New York to Oklahoma, reflecting a consensus that phones are bad for kids. Eight other states and the District of Columbia have rules or recommendations for local districts. There’s an increasing focus on banning phones throughout the school day. Some states with traditions of local control are mandating only that districts adopt cellphone policies.

US–CONGRESS-TAX CUTS

Speaker Johnson and Republicans head to the White House as Trump’s tax breaks bill hits trouble

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump’s multitrillion-dollar tax breaks package is at risk of stalling. House Speaker Mike Johnson and conservative Republican holdouts are heading to the White House later Wednesday for the last-ditch talks to salvage the bill. Johnson had hoped to vote as soon as Wednesday on the 1,000-page plus bill after grinding through an all-night committee hearing. But debate dragged into midday. Democrats lack the votes to stop Trump’s package, so they’re using all available tools to press their opposition. Conservatives are angry at last-minute deals and worried the package will added to the nation’s debt. The Congressional Budget Office says the tax provisions would add $3.8 trillion to federal deficits.
