ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) -- State parks officials will honor a local non-profit organization for its longtime efforts to preserve and enhance Krug Park.

Monday's City Council meeting will see the Missouri Parks & Recreation Association award Friends of Krug Park with the 2025 Citation of Merit Organization Award for its dedication to the historic 123-year old park.

The award recognizes members, citizens and organizations in the state that have rendered outstanding service to recreation and/or parks in the state of Missouri.

Founded in 2012, the grassroots volunteer group provides key support by bringing teams of citizens together to assist and complete projects, from trash cleanup to painting and other maintenance-related activities.

The group also organizes a variety of events throughout the year to promote community engagement, volunteerism and park history.

Friends of Krug Park has played a key role with the 2021 Parks Tax citizen's committee to secure $12 million to rejuvenate the park, with project construction expected to kickoff this spring or early summer.
