Tracking a cool Tuesday and frost potential tomorrow morning

Good morning, St. Joseph, and happy Tuesday! We’re starting off the morning on a cool note — about 10 degrees colder than this time yesterday. It’s definitely soup, sweatshirt and sweatpants weather, with temperatures staying on the cool side throughout the day.

A strong northwesterly breeze will make it feel even cooler, with gusts near 40 mph at times. Afternoon highs will only reach around 63 degrees.

Because of those strong, gusty winds and dry air, there’s an elevated fire risk across the region today. Be sure to avoid outdoor burning, properly extinguish cigarettes, and take extra precautions to prevent fires from spreading.

By Wednesday morning, temperatures will dip into the mid- to low 30s, bringing the potential for frost development across northwest Missouri. While this isn’t expected to be a hard freeze, some light frost could form on grass and plants — so it’s a good idea to bring in any sensitive vegetation. Thursday morning will also be chilly, with temperatures once again near freezing.

We’ll stay dry through midweek before rain chances return late Thursday night into early Friday, as moisture moves in from the south. Showers are expected through much of Friday, tapering off on Saturday. Another round of rain looks possible to start next week.

Through the rest of the week and into next week, temperatures will hold near seasonal averages in the low to mid-60s.
