ST JOSEPH, Mo (News-Press NOW) -- Despite questions surrounding an injury he sustained at The Ohio State University last season, Josh Simmons has been a full participant in training camp for the Chiefs and is looking like an elite left tackle already.

Before the pros, Simmons was a right tackle at San Diego State University from 2021 to 2022 before transferring to Ohio State University.

In his time at Ohio State, he only allowed one sack while moving from right tackle to left tackle. Knowing how to play on both sides of the offensive line means Simmons could see snaps at either position when the season starts.

Simmons sustained a left knee injury, later diagnosed as a torn patellar tendon in his left knee, while in his senior season at Ohio State. This injury caused him to fall in the draft to the end of the first round, where the Chiefs selected him with the 32nd overall pick.

Simmons talked with media after training camp on Friday and said he hasn't had any issues with his knee yet.

"As we speak I haven't felt any issues with it yet," Simmons said.

He is also an amazing competitor and loves going up against Dave Spagnuolo's defense every day.

"It's the funnest thing you can do, competing against [George] Karlaftis and Mike Danna," Simmons said. "That competitive stamina just wipes all that tiredness away."

The talk of Chiefs training camp has been about Josh Simmons; the offensive and defensive line are fans of him, the coaches speak highly of him and the fans are excited to watch him this year.

Head Coach Andy Reid touched on how the reps Simmons is receiving are important for him.

"He's getting a lot of reps, which I think is important for a rookie," Reid said. "He's been there and consistently showing up every day and working and not taking plays off or any of that. But he's a worker."

Chiefs Offensive Linemen Creed Humphrey and Kingsley Suamataia had nothing but praise for the rookie when they spoke to the media earlier in camp.

"He's extremely talented, he moves really well, very athletic and very strong," Humphrey said. "His first punch is insane, he's got a ton of stuff that a lot of people don't naturally have."

"He's doing a great job. As a rookie, being able to come out there and compete and put his best foot forward every day," Suamataia said. "We're just all trying to help each other out so we can all be on the same page."

Simmons touched on how the offensive line veterans are helping him adjust to the pace of the NFL.

"They've seen it all. They've made the rookie mistakes so they're trying to help me so I don't make them," Simmons said. "They help me so I can at least be ready for those welcome to the NFL moments."

Even the defensive line is complimenting Simmons on his play. Veteran defensive lineman Mike Danna had nothing but praise for his competitiveness and said the sky's the limit for Simmons.

"He has a bright future, the sky's the limit for him, you know, he comes in day in and day out," Danna said. "It is great to see him working with the ones and seeing him compete every day."

Earlier this week in camp, Josh Simmons got into it with another rookie in Ashton Gillotte. They started a scuffle that ended in them being separated. Tensions were hot on an even hotter day, but Coach Reid said they made up after practice. Reid also said the scuffle shows the fierceness and competitiveness of both rookies.

Having a great offensive line group around him that is focused on making him better and improving his game, Simmons could become one of the NFL's greatest tackles when his career comes to an end.
