A quick call can save a headache for homeowners working on a yard project.

Utility companies recognized Aug. 11 as National 811 Day, serving as a reminder for people to call 811 before digging outdoors. A call to the safety number can prevent injuries or damage to underground utility lines.

Flags and paint on grass generally mark areas that contain utility work underground, signaling not to dig there.

Jim Stafford, construction supervisor for Spire, said calling 811 before digging can save homeowners from damaging lines that would interrupt service and potentially lead to a costly repair.

“There’s a ton of things underground now,” Stafford said. “You don’t know what’s there, how deep they are. You know, you could be digging anywhere from 6 inches to 6 foot and run into something. You just don’t know what’s there, so it’s best to call, have it marked out and just be safe about it.”

If people are considering digging in any unmarked location, they are advised to call 811 or visit missouri-811.org at least three working days in advance.
