Comments on recent news

Just a couple of comments on recent news items. First, discussing the issue of the bond failure to build a new high school south of Highway 36 and now talk of consolidating to a two high school plan. From the talk I hear around town, many residents do not support this idea. They feel Central and Lafayette would receive more focus than Benton. Perhaps instead of just considering high schools, some thought could be given to considering combining the high school and middle school of each area, and they would share the same building under the names of current high schools — Benton, Central and Lafayette. When I was in school, our high school and middle school shared the same building, with the high school on one side and the middle school on the other. This would decrease the number of buildings needed from six to three. Perhaps one of the current buildings in each area could be remodeled to accommodate both high and middle grades. By downsizing to one building, there would be savings on upkeep and utilities, ect. This might be more acceptable to the community.

Another issue is the idea of President Trump wanting to rename Veterans Day to Victory Day for WWI and formal recognition of May 8 as Victory Day for WWII. I am all for recognizing and honoring our veterans, but I believe veterans from all wars should be recognized and honored — Korean War, Vietnam, U.S. Invasion of Panama, Gulf War, etc. Some wars were not popular and did not end with desired results, but our veterans followed their orders, and many were killed or injured. In my opinion, anyone who fights for our country should be recognized and honored on “Veterans Day.”

Make the U.S.A. better with your vote!

We all want our children to be healthy and well educated. This gives them the tools to be financially independent, hold a good job and contribute to the good of our neighbors. Healthy, educated children make the USA an even better place to live.

Dictators are the opposite. They want to keep their people dumb, sick and poor because it makes it easier for them to rule and enrich themselves. They don’t care about our neighbors’ children, the kids at church or our own. Cutting Medicaid and research funding to universities makes us sick, destroys good education and lowers the chances of finding cures to make us healthy again.

Let’s all go out and find good candidates who will make the children of the USA healthy, happy and smart. Offer to help your candidate with their campaign. Make the USA a better place to live with your actions and vote!
