Helsel, Joyce E. 1936-2025 St. Joseph, Mo.

Joyce Eileen Helsel, 89, of St. Joseph, passed away Sunday, Aug. 24, 2025, at Mosaic Life Care, in St. Joseph. She was born Feb. 8, 1936, in Hastings, Nebraska, daughter of Gertrude and Carl Hlavaty.

She graduated from high school in Hastings. She married Roger “Bud” Helsel on Oct. 1, 1954. Joyce retired from Methodist Hospital as a CNA. She was a long time member of Journey Baptist Church. Joyce enjoyed traveling with her husband and more recently watching soap operas and playing computer games. Joyce was a devoted mother and grandmother and enjoyed taking care of her family.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roger “Bud” Helsel Sr.; brother, Richard Hlavaty; and son, Roger “Buddy” Lee Helsel Jr.

Survivors include daughter, Kathy (Ron) Martin, of St. Joseph; son, Robby (Amy) Helsel, of St. Joseph; grandchildren, Kiefer Helsel, Jay (Jennifer) Martin, Jenna Kepner, Jeremy (Kristen) Martin; great-grandchildren, Austin (Destiny), Trinity, Jax, Treyton and Jude; and two great-great- grandsons, Daxton and Kashton.

Funeral Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, 2025, at Rupp Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday. Pastor Adam Woodrum, officiating. The Interment will be follow services at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials are requested to the Journey Baptist Church. The family would like to express a special thanks to Pam Coon and her caregivers.
