ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) -- The Coy family has always been known for their athletic achievements in St Joseph.

Chris Coy, son of Richard Coy, is the next great Coy to come out of St. Joseph.

After an amazing four-year career at Benton High School, the two-way star signed to play Division 1 baseball at the University of Nebraska-Omaha this coming year.

This summer, Chris signed with the St Joseph Mustangs, which reunited him with his former high school coach, Johnny Coy...Who also happens to be his uncle.

Johnny Coy played four years of Division 1 baseball at Wichita State University from 2010 to 2013 and has been right by Chris' side throughout his baseball journey.

"I've been with him every step of the way since the day he was born," Johnny said. "This has been a goal he's had since he could walk."

Johnny coached Chris all four years of high school at Benton and now coaches him on the Mustangs.

"I'm glad he still plays for me in the summers because I get to still be close to him even after high school," Johnny said.

Playing in a total of 15 games, so far, for the Mustangs this season, Chris is holding his own with college-level competition as a high school graduate.

"He's doing a really good job so far this summer, he's playing really well, he's swinging the bat well, he's getting a lot of hits, he's also pitching well," Johnny said. "That's all I can ask for a kid just graduating high school."

Playing at a high level is nothing new for Chris. Whether it was playing with his brother or coming to the Mustangs as a high school graduate, he was always up for the challenge.

"I always played up on my older brother's team, like, five years up," Chris said. "I didn't play tee-ball or nothing, I went straight to machine pitch."

Chris knows the extent of his family's athletic history and considers them to be his role models throughout his career.

"I am the player I am today because of [Johnny], my dad, and my aunts, my mom, you know, being surrounded by a lot of good role models, it's been a huge impact in my life," Chris said.

Chris said he has hopes to play professional baseball after college, and is looking to continue to improve his skills throughout the Mustangs' season and during college.
