St. Joseph has been a hot spot for filmmaking, and now, at Central High School, another movie is underway.

Part of the reason why St. Joseph and surrounding cities have seen so many films come through is because of Missouri film tax credits, which make it an appealing location for production industries. The latest movie in town is being produced by Marks Media, a local media organization based in St. Joseph.

“We’re collaborating with multiple people, to really write the best story, the best jokes, the best humor, the most touching moments, to bring really a holiday magic story a family Christmas story to St. Joseph,” said Jason Hudson, film director.

The title of the film will remain a secret until the Christmas magic is in full swing next year, leading up to the trailer reveal. For now, the cast and crew are creating a family-friendly film written and directed by Hudson, which will tell the story of two younger siblings who wish to be older.

Before they transform to older men, the younger versions of Lucas and Bobby are played by Tristian Hallett and Abel Affleck. They shared their experience with being involved in the film and how their characters differ from who they are.

“I kind of antagonize and so I’m kind of the meaner older brother,” Hallett said.

In contrast, Affleck’s character is more agreeable to his peers.

“He’s a cute 9-year-old boy that will believe in anything and stays positive,” Affleck said.

As a director, Hudson knew amongst 180 other auditions that they were the right kids for the job.

“Tristan and Abel just blew us out of the water. When we watched their auditions and then when they came back, we had our whole team watch it. And we’re like, ‘These kids are phenomenal.’ So, if you like movies like Home Alone with Macaulay Culkin, I think we got a great one in store,” Hudson said.

With each take, one mark at a time, Hudson is grateful for the local support surrounded by the film.

“The town of St. Joseph has said yes, and that’s how we’re able to do it. Without the community embracing what we’re doing, we couldn’t do this,” Hudson said.

For the boys, this film is a launching pad for their goals and dreams, and with a little Christmas magic and guidance, they have the potential to get there.

“I really want an Academy Award someday. I think that’s really high hopes, but I know I can get there,” Hallett said.

The film will be announced next year with a full premiere and red-carpet entrance.
