JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KQTV) -- The Missouri State Highway Patrol is encouraging drivers to ring in 2026 with good decisions related to safe driving.

The 2026 New Year's holiday counting period will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, and ends at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4.

MSHP said during the 2024-2025 New Year's counting period, one person was killed, with 118 people injured. The Patrol saw a total of 264 traffic crashes in Missouri.

MSHP also said that if plans to welcome the new year include alcohol, designate a sober driver or utilize a rideshare service or taxi.

Anyone planning to travel is encouraged to buckle up and keep their phones down if they're at the wheel, as Missouri is now a hands-free state.

Due to ongoing road construction throughout the state, the Patrol suggests that travelers use the Missouri Department of Transportation's Traveler Information Map. The map provides up-to-date information such as road closures, delays, construction zones and alternative routes.

Missouri law also states that, if drivers are using windshield wipers, headlights must be on.

The public is encouraged to call the Patrol's Emergency Assistance Number 800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone if they witness criminal activity or experience an emergency.

The emergency numbers are operational for both highway and water emergencies.
