Richard Joseph Garvey, 71, passed away on Feb. 1, 2026, following a brief illness. He was born on Sept. 30, 1954, in St. Joseph.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Richard attended Christian Brothers/LeBlond High School, graduating in 1972, and continued his education at Benedictine College, in Atchison, Kansas, later completing his degree at Missouri Western. He dedicated more than 45 years to a career in banking, working at several institutions and forming lasting friendships along the way. While working at American National Bank, he met his best friend, a friendship that grew into a deep and loving partnership. She later became his wife, Anita, with whom he shared 29 wonderful years of marriage.

Family was the center of Richard’s life. He is survived by his beloved wife, Anita Garvey; his son, Michael (Kristen) Garvey; his daughter, Amber Garvey (Naser); and his two stepsons, Joshua (Jenna) Thurn and Tyson Thurn, whom he loved as his own. He is also survived by his sister, Mary (Steve) Warren; and his nephews, Scott and Brian Warren, who reside in Des Moines, Iowa; and many extended family members. His grandchildren, Landin, Livia, Ellie and Clayton brought him immeasurable joy.

Richard will be remembered for his warmth, loyalty, and the many friendships he built throughout his life. His presence, humor, and steady kindness will be deeply missed by his family and will also be missed by many friends.

Private Farewell Services and Interment at a later date, Mount Olivet Cemetery. Rosary 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, Meierhoffer Funeral Home, where the family will gather with friends 6:30 to 8 p.m.
