Saint Joseph symphony brings a horror classic to life

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) -- On Saturday, Oct. 18, the Saint Joseph Symphony invites the community to an electrifying evening of music with its presentation of a live performance of Frankenstein at the historic Missouri Theater.
The performance combines powerful orchestral music with a darkly thrilling tale of Mary Shelley’s iconic creature.
The film will be projected on the big screen as the live orchestra performs the full score, creating an immersive cinematic and musical experience unlike any other.
St. Joseph Symphony Executive Director Nancy Schmidt-Brunson said it's awesome and inspiring to think about how the original 1931 film was shown in a movie theater where it likely was viewed in that year.
“The original showing was probably accompanied by the organ that once lived at the Missouri Theater because the film originally had no set score,” she said.
Under the baton of Music Director Christopher Kelts, the Symphony will perform Michael Shapiro’s Frankenstein movie score. Kelts said the performance is truly a feast for senses.
“It brings together the best of film, theater, and symphonic storytelling,” Kelts said. “Audiences will feel the tension, the tragedy, and the brilliance of Shelley’s masterpiece come alive through live music."
Guests are encouraged to come in costume and enjoy festive lobby activities at 6:00 p.m. before the concert begins at 7:00 p.m. with complimentary wine provided by Windy Wine Company and Halloween candy.
Tickets are available now through the Saint Joseph Symphony’s website or by calling the box office from Tuesday through Friday at 11:00 a.m. through 3:00 pm.
