NTSB finds Army chopper in fatal midair crash with plane was above altitude limit

SUMMARY: Investigators have found that a helicopter involved in a deadly crash with a passenger plane over Washington was flying above its height limit. The helicopter’s altitude-measuring instrument was also inaccurate. These findings were revealed during the first day of National Transportation Safety Board hearings. The crash, which occurred in January, killed 67 people. The board is examining how the Federal Aviation Administration and the Army may have contributed to the incident. The hearings will continue for three days, focusing on military helicopter routes, collision avoidance technology, and air traffic controller training at Ronald Reagan National Airport.

US–Extreme Weather-Heat

Record-breaking heat wave scorches Southeast US

SUMMARY: Residents in the Southeast U.S. are no strangers to hot weather in the summertime. But the sweltering heat this week set at least one record, and forecasters urged residents to limit being outside if possible and to hydrate. The all-time high temperature record at Tampa International Airport was broken on Sunday when the thermometer hit 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The previous record had been 99 degrees Fahrenheit set in June 2020. The National Weather Service said Tuesday that the prolonged heat wave was expected to peak in the southeast U.S. at midweek.

US–Election 2026-Texas Redistricting

Texas Republicans propose new US House map with more winnable GOP seats

SUMMARY: Texas Republicans have proposed a new congressional map that creates five additional GOP-leaning districts as they brace for a challenging midterm election in 2026. This move aims to bolster their chances of maintaining control in the U.S. House. The redrawn map comes during a special legislative session called by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. President Donald Trump has urged Texas Republicans to reshape districts in the party’s favor. Some Democratic state lawmakers have talked of walking out of the special session to block action on redistricting, which has had mixed results in the past. Meanwhile, Democrats in California and New York are considering redrawing their districts to counter GOP efforts.

Court restricts who can bring voting rights challenges in a case involving voters with disabilities

SUMMARY: A federal appeals court panel has ruled that private individuals and organizations cannot bring voting rights cases under a section of the law that allows others to assist voters who are blind, have disabilities or are unable to read. It’s the latest ruling from the St. Louis-based 8th Circuit Court of Appeals, saying only the government can bring lawsuits alleging violations of the Voting Rights Act. The findings upend decades of precedent and will likely be headed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Monday’s ruling followed the reasoning of another 8th Circuit panel in a previous case from 2023.

Chiefs’ Chris Jones: The backstory behind the ‘Chris Rule,’ and what’s made him a three-time All-Pro

SUMMARY: Chris Jones of the Kansas City Chiefs has been a standout in the NFL for nearly a decade. His journey to becoming a three-time All-Pro includes a memorable moment six years ago. Jones injured his calf while trying to tackle Patrick Mahomes. This led to the creation of the “Chris Rule,” where he must stop once he beats the offensive line in practice. Fortunately for Jones, there are no such rules when games begin. He followed a 15 1/2-sack season three years ago and 10 1/2 the next season with five sacks last year, a number made more modest only because the 6-foot-6, 310-pound Jones was faced with constant double- and triple-teams. Braves place 5-time All-Star Ronald Acuña Jr. on the injured list with Achilles tendon inflammation

SUMMARY: The Atlanta Braves have placed Ronald Acuña Jr. on the 10-day injured list because of right Achilles tendon inflammation. The severity of the injury is still unclear. Despite wanting to play on Tuesday, the five-time All-Star came up limping while chasing a ball and was removed from the game. The Braves recalled Jarred Kelenic from Triple-A Gwinnett to fill his roster spot. Acuña has faced multiple injuries in his career but returned this season with a strong performance.
