Tracking a hot end to the weekend

After a soggy couple of days, we’re finally on the upswing and looking ahead to drier weather. The only downside is the heat. This evening, rain and clouds are expected to stay clear of the area, tracking east of Highway 35. A few small clouds might drift through, but the heat will remain in full force.

Overnight, don’t expect much relief, with temperatures only dropping to around 75 degrees. Sunday is when the heat really starts to ramp up. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory that will go into effect at 11 a.m. Sunday and continue through 7 p.m. Tuesday. Over the next few days, heat index values could climb as high as 110 degrees, making for dangerously hot conditions.

Make sure to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated as much as possible. The Red Rally for the Kansas City Chiefs takes place tomorrow from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., right in the peak of the heat. High temperatures will be near 90 degrees, but the heat index—or "feels like" temperature—will be closer to 108. If you're attending, take proper precautions, wear light clothing, and take frequent breaks in the shade or indoors.

After Tuesday, a wave of rain is expected to move through on Wednesday and Thursday, bringing some much-needed relief from the heat. Temperatures will drop from the upper 90s on Tuesday to around 85 on Wednesday, and may cool even further to the low 70s by Friday. However, rain chances and cloud cover may persist from Wednesday into Saturday.
