DESCRIPTION: At least seven states and the District of Columbia have offered Medicaid coverage to low-income adult immigrants, but that’s beginning to change. Hundreds of thousands of people who are in the U.S. without legal permission and live in California, Illinois or Minnesota will see their coverage limited or ended this year. The programs cost way more than state officials had projected at a time when they’re running multibillion-dollar deficits. These cuts were backed by Democratic governors who are believed to have presidential ambitions and once championed expanding health coverage to immigrants. Doctors and advocates say the move will cost states more in the long run because people will avoid preventive health care and end up in hospitals.
