US–Measles Outbreak-Explainer

Arizona officials confirm measles outbreak in Navajo County

SUMMARY: Arizona health officials say there are four confirmed linked measles cases, making it another state with an outbreak. The U.S. is up to 1,168 confirmed measles cases this year. The largest outbreak in Texas continued to slow this week. Pennsylvania and Michigan declared their outbreaks over. Two elementary school-aged children and an adult have died from measles this year. Other states with active outbreaks include Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma and Ohio. Measles is caused by a highly contagious virus that’s airborne. It is preventable through vaccines, and has been considered eliminated from the U.S. since 2000.

US–General Motors-US Plants

GM to invest $4 billion to shift some production from Mexico to the US

SUMMARY: Shares of General Motors are up before the opening bell after announcing plans to invest $4 billion to shift some production from Mexico to U.S. manufacturing plants as the automaker navigates tariffs that could drive prices higher. GM said that the investment will be made over the next two years and is for its gas and electric vehicles. The company will add production of the gas-powered Chevrolet Blazer and Chevrolet Equinox, which are made in Mexico, to two American plants starting in 2027. The Blazer will be produced at GM’s Spring Hill, Tennessee plant, while the Equinox will be made at its Kansas City, Kansas facility.

2 people found dead at remote island US national park in Lake Superior

SUMMARY: Rangers hiked for miles to confirm the deaths of two people who were camping at an island national park in Michigan’s Lake Superior. The deaths were reported to staff Sunday at Isle Royale National Park. No other details have been released and the park said Tuesday the deaths were under investigation. Isle Royale is an extraordinary wilderness park, accessible only by ferry, personal boat or seaplane. It’s open only six months a year due to extreme weather. The island’s population of moose and wolves is regularly studied by wildlife scientists.

US–Immigration Raids-Omaha

Federal immigration raid at Omaha meat production plant sparks protests

SUMMARY: Immigration authorities have raided an Omaha meat production plant and detained dozens of workers. That prompted confusion from company officials who say they complied with the law and sparked protests outside the operation. Gary Rohwer, CEO and owner of Glenn Valley Foods, said ICE officers showed up at his plant with a list of 97 workers they wanted to check. Omaha City Councilman Ron Hug said the raids are “unjust and disruptive” and undermine economic stability and growth in the area. Douglas County Commissioner Roger Garcia said the raids instilled a lot of fear in the community.

US–Trump-National Monuments

US Justice Department says Trump can cancel national monuments that protect landscapes

SUMMARY: Lawyers for President Donald Trump’s administration say he has the authority to abolish national monuments meant to protect historical and archaeological sites. That includes two monuments in California created by former President Joe Biden at the request of Native American tribes. A Justice Department legal opinion released Tuesday disavowed a 1938 determination that monuments created by previous president can’t be revoked. The finding comes as the Interior Department under Trump has been weighing changes to monuments across the nation as part of the administration’s push to expand U.S. energy production.

REL–Southern Baptists

Southern Baptist delegates at national meeting overwhelmingly call for banning same-sex marriage

SUMMARY: Southern Baptist delegates at their national meeting overwhelmingly endorsed banning same-sex marriage — including a call for a reversal of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 10-year-old precedent legalizing it nationwide. They also called for legislators to curtail sports betting and to support policies that promote childbearing. The votes came at the gathering of more than 10,000 church representatives at the annual meeting of the nation’s largest Protestant denomination. A proposed resolution says legislators have a duty to “pass laws that reflect the truth of creation and natural law — about marriage, sex, human life, and family” and to oppose laws contradicting “what God has made plain through nature and Scripture.”

US–Oklahoma Execution-Hanson

Oklahoma court clears the way for execution of a man convicted in a Tulsa woman’s killing

SUMMARY: An Oklahoma appeals court has ordered a stay of execution for a man on death row to be lifted, clearing the way for him to receive a lethal injection. The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals issued its order on Wednesday. John Fitzgerald Hanson has been scheduled to be executed Thursday for killing a Tulsa woman in 1999. A district court judge temporarily halted the execution Monday after Hanson’s attorneys argued he didn’t receive a fair clemency hearing before the state’s Pardon and Parole Board. The attorneys argued the 3-2 vote against Hanson was tainted because one board member worked for the district attorney’s office that prosecuted his case.
