It’s hard to imagine where Mosaic Life Care’s anesthesiology department would be without the leadership of Moe Matthias over nearly four decades.

Matthias has been integral in numerous processes and plans to improve perioperative and anesthetic care within the hospital system to the benefit of countless patients.

“Anesthesiology was a lot riskier back then, now it’s a lot safer and its improved vastly,” he said. “We have very high-quality equipment and machinery.”

His colleagues are the first to commend him for his unwavering dedication to care, and the chances are high he was the one who helped bring them on board.

Matthias is directly responsible for building Mosaic’s team of anesthesia staff over the course of his career, from the days of Heartland Health to now Mosaic Life Care.

“When I first came to town we had three physicians that were doing anesthesia and six or seven CRNAs,” he said. “As we’ve grown we now have probably 25 CRNAs and 12 or 13 anesthesiologists.”

He’s watched recruiting, once a challenge, improve significantly as the department has advanced.

Along with advancements in the operation itself, anesthesia services by the hospital have successfully expanded to cover other healthcare facilities and branches as the need has grown.

“One of the greatest attributes of the department at this point in time is we have a great group of people that actually are working together, docs and CRNAs,” he said.

Led by strong coordination, Matthias takes great pride in the foundation that’s been built within the department and is excited for the future of anesthesiology services with new advancements potentially always around the corner.
