The owner of a small, elderly dog killed by a police officer in a northern Boone County town will get more than a quarter-million dollars from a settlement with the city and the former cop.

The city and Woodson, through the Missouri Public Entity Risk Management Fund, will pay Nicholas Hunter $282,500 after Woodson killed Hunter’s dog, Teddy, in May 2024. Hunter filed his lawsuit that same month.

A total of $500,000 was paid out by the defendants. The Crinnian Law Firm, which represented Hunter, will get the remaining $217,500.

Hunter agreed to give up the right to further legal action against the city for Teddy’s death.

Woodson shot Teddy, a blind and deaf Shih Tzu weighing 13 pounds, to death after being sent to a “dog at large” call. Woodson shot Teddy after trying to catch the dog multiple times.

The city claimed the officer saw the dog “behaving strangely and displaying signs of possible injuries,” which was “perceived to be rabid behavior.”
