SD–South Dakota-Film Incentives

South Dakota lacks incentives that could lead to movies set there to be filmed there

SUMMARY: Several movies that have been set in South Dakota haven’t actually been filmed there. South Dakota News Watch reports the state is one of only nine states without such tax or other incentives. A film released last month, “Americana” is set in South Dakota, but was filmed in New Mexcico, which has a minimum tax credit of 25%. The 2017 film “South Dakota” was filmed in Iowa. Supporters of the incentives say drawing film productions is good for the economy because production crews and extras can be hired locally and crews stay in local hotels and eat at local restaurants. An effort to create film incentives in South Dakota seven years ago failed.

US–Jail Death-Kansas

Kansas deputy charged with murder in the death of a man in custody

SUMMARY: A Kansas sheriff’s deputy has been charged with murder in the death of an inmate who sustained broken ribs after his back was kneeled on after he was wheeled from the infirmary to his cell. A prosecutor said Thursday that deputy Richard Fatherley has been charged with second-degree murder and an alternative count of involuntary manslaughter in the July 5 death of 50-year-old Charles Adair. Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree provided no details. However, the autopsy said one officer knelt on Adair’s back during an altercation. Fatherley’s attorney says the second-degree murder charge requires the state to prove that the defendant showed an extreme indifference to life, but that this case did not meet that element.

US–Farm Aid

Willie Nelson and Neil Young highlight 40th Farm Aid concert

SUMMARY: Farm Aid celebrates its 40th anniversary Saturday in Minneapolis. The concerts, launched by Willie Nelson, Neil Young, and John Mellencamp in the farm crisis of the 1980s, continue to raise awareness about the plight of family farmers. Bob Dylan is a late addition to the program. They’ll be joined at the University of Minnesota by artists including Dave Matthews and Kenny Chesney. A labor dispute between the university and Teamsters almost scuttled the festival, but a deal was reached late last week. Farm Aid raises over $1 million annually. Nathaniel Rateliff, a returning performer, says the event highlights music’s power to unite across political divides.

US-Election-2026-Redistricting-Indiana

Pete Buttigieg rallies against redistricting in home state of Indiana

SUMMARY: As mid-cycle redistricting advances in several states, former Secretary of Transportation and Democratic commentator Pete Buttigieg returned to his home state of Indiana Thursday to rally against GOP efforts there to redraw the congressional map. Buttigieg, who was mayor of South Bend, Indiana, before he ran for president in 2020, is a leading contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028. While lawmakers in California, Texas and Missouri have voted to advance new congressional maps, Indiana Republican lawmakers have been much more hesitant to take action. President Donald Trump wants Republican states to redraw their maps to try and offset losses in the 2026 midterm election, which typically favor the party opposite to the one in power.

US–Organic Sugar-Prices

Organic food prices could soar as US imposes import restrictions and new tariffs on specialty sugar

SUMMARY: The limiting of duty-free organic sugar imports and new tariffs are expected to cause the prices of all kinds of organic products from granola to yogurt to rise in the coming months. Industry officials say that could put some food manufacturers out of business. The Trump administration limited duty-free imports of specialty sugars in July and imposed a 50% tariff on Brazil, a major supplier of organic sugar. Since the U.S. produces almost no organic sugar, manufacturers are facing an estimated 34% increase in sugar costs. They say they will have to reduce profits, raise prices or halt production.

Kaprizov renews fondness for ‘second home’ Minnesota despite starting Wild camp without new contract

SUMMARY: Kirill Kaprizov has begun training camp with the Minnesota Wild without a new contract. His current deal expires next summer. The 28-year-old left wing told reporters after practice that he’s not looking to leave the team. Wild general manager Bill Guerin said he’s not concerned about the negotiation process in light of a report last week that Kaprizov turned down an offer that would’ve been the highest-paying contract in NHL history. Neither Guerin nor Kaprizov would comment on the nature or the substance of the talks. Kaprizov said he’s simply trying to focus on hockey.

NFL: Eagles should’ve been penalized for a false start on a tush-push conversion vs. the Chiefs

FBN–On Football-Chiefs’ Run

It’s premature to count out Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs: Analysis

SUMMARY: Tom Brady was finished. Bill Belichick couldn’t coach anymore. The New England Patriots’ run of dominance had ended. Those were the premature headlines and hot takes after the “We’re on to Cincinnati” game 11 years ago. Now, it’s the Chiefs hearing similar questions.  The Chiefs are in an unfamiliar position at 0-2 for the first time since that 2014 season, the last time they didn’t win a division title. The offense is struggling and their decade of reign over the AFC West is in a precarious position. Like Belichick and Brady when they faced criticism in 2014, Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes are 3-2 in Super Bowls together.

Oklahoma’s Sooner Schooner: A mascot with a storied past and unforgettable moments

SUMMARY: Oklahoma’s iconic mascot, the Sooner Schooner, has been running onto the field after Oklahoma scores at home games since 1964. The covered wagon became Oklahoma’s official mascot in 1980. It’s pulled by ponies named Boomer and Sooner. The Schooner has had its share of mishaps, including a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the 1985 Orange Bowl and tip-overs in 1993 and 2019. Despite these, Sooner fans love the Schooner and its representation of their state. Former Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer is among those who appreciates its longevity and the affinity the fans have for it.
