Authorities eyeing whether a kitchen job had a role in the ‘Devil in the Ozarks’ prison escape
SUMMARY: Arkansas authorities are looking at whether a prison kitchen job played a role in the escape of a convicted former police chief known as the “Devil in the Ozarks.” A prison system spokesperson said Thursday that Grant Hardin was housed in a maximum-security wing of the Calico Rock prison he escaped from over the weekend. Hardin got away Sunday after donning an outfit designed to look like a law enforcement uniform. He was serving lengthy sentences for murder and rape. The FBI has announced a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to Hardin’s arrest.

Nebraska Republicans sought to weaken voter-backed paid sick leave. A Democrat helped them do it.
SUMMARY: The Nebraska Legislature has passed a bill that significantly weakens a voter-backed measure requiring employers to offer paid sick leave. The Republican-led effort managed it with the help of a Democrat. The bill overcame a filibuster Wednesday with a vote from Sen. Jane Raybould, a Democrat from Lincoln. Raybould’s family owns several grocery store chains in the state. She sponsored another bill that sought to restrict a voter-backed minimum wage law, but failed earlier this month to pass. Her plan to attach it to the paid sick leave measure on Wednesday also failed.
