US–PLANE CRASH-SAN DIEGO

Music talent agent among dead after jet crashes into San Diego neighborhood

SUMMARY: The music agency Sound Talent Group says three of its employees died on the private plane that crashed into a San Diego neighborhood on Thursday. The music agency says the dead include Dave Shapiro, the agency’s co-founder. Shapiro is listed as the owner of the plane and has a pilot’s license. Sound Talent Group has represented artists including Hanson, Sum 41 and Vanessa Carlton. The agency didn’t share the names of the other two employees who were killed. The private jet crashed early Thursday into a neighborhood of U.S. Navy-owned housing in San Diego during foggy weather, igniting at least one home and numerous vehicles parked on the street.

US–CONGRESS-TAX CUTS-SENATE

What issues to watch as ‘big, beautiful bill’ moves to the Senate

SUMMARY: House Republicans are jubilant about muscling through President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful” tax and immigration package by a single vote. But across the Capitol, senators are more cautious. Senate Majority Leader John Thune can afford to lose three Republican senators and still pass the bill, and there are more than that who have problems with it. Like the House, he will have to balance the concerns from moderate and conservative members of his conference. Republicans’ aspirational deadline is July 4, ahead of a potential debt default. Thune said groups of senators had already been meeting to discuss the legislation.

US–GEORGE FLOYD-BLACK LIVES MATTER-MURALS

Black Lives Matter street murals stand as an enduring reminder of protests against racism

SUMMARY: In 2020, Black Lives Matter street murals appeared in cities across the U.S. following the police killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery. The artworks came in solidarity with a nationwide reckoning on police brutality and racism prompted by unprecedented, multiracial mass protests. Five years on, many of those murals are still on display and continue to be maintained by activists, community groups and others. But the mural that inspired them all — 35-foot-tall capital letters in yellow paint on a Washington, D.C., street one block from the White House — has been removed since Donald Trump’s reelection.

US–AVIATION SAFETY-THINGS TO KNOW

This redundant aviation safety net helps keep planes safe when controllers lose contact

SUMMARY: News that air traffic controllers directing planes into New Jersey’s busiest airport twice lost both their radar and radios is alarming. But pilots, the Federal Aviation Administration and other aviation experts say that even the simultaneous failure of primary and main backup systems left other redundant systems and training to keep planes safely airborne. Former crash investigator Jeff Guzzetti doesn’t think the risk of a crash increased significantly during repeated outages affecting the Newark Airport over the past month. He says that’s because of all the redundancy built into the system.
