US–ELECTION 2026-MINNESOTA-CONGRESS

US Rep. Angie Craig of Minnesota joins the race for retiring Sen. Tina Smith’s seat

SUMMARY: U.S. Rep. Angie Craig is the latest Minnesota Democrat to enter an increasingly competitive race for the U.S. Senate seat held by the retiring Sen. Tina Smith. In her launch video unveiled Tuesday, Craig vows to “break through the chaos.” She says she’ll fight back against “a president trampling our rights and freedoms as he profits for personal gain, and a cowardly Republican Party rolling over and letting it all happen.” Craig is entering the Senate race after holding recent town hall meetings in all four congressional districts held by Minnesota Republicans. Smith announced in February that she wouldn’t run again.

US–PUBLIC RELIGIOUS SCHOOL-SUPREME COURT

Can public money flow to Catholic charter school? The Supreme Court will decide

SUMMARY: The Catholic Church in Oklahoma wants taxpayers to pay for an online charter school that “is faithful to the teachings of Jesus Christ.” The Supreme Court could well approve. St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School would be the nation’s first religious charter school. A ruling from the high court allowing public money to flow directly to a religious school almost certainly would lead to others. Opponents warn it would blur the separation between church and state, sap money from public schools and possibly upend the rules governing charter schools in almost every state. The court hears arguments Wednesday in one of the term’s most closely watched cases.

US–HEGSETH-ENDS TRUMP PROGRAM

Hegseth boasts about ending ‘woke’ program on women and security that Trump had signed into law

SUMMARY: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is boasting on “X” that he had dismantled a program supporting women on security teams — and may not have realized the program he just tried to break was not a “woke” Biden-era initiative but instead a celebrated program signed into law by his boss President Donald Trump. Hegseth in a agitated tweet Tuesday called the “Women, Peace & Security” program at the Department of Defense “a UNITED NATIONS program pushed by feminists and left-wing activists. Politicians fawn over it; troops HATE it.” But the legislation was actually endorsed by Trump, was heralded by Trump family members and is supported by Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine. A spokeswoman for Hegseth did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
