Luigi Mangione’s notes to self: ‘Pluck eyebrows,’ ‘Keep momentum, FBI slower overnight’

SUMMARY: A to-do list and travel plans found during Luigi Mangione’s arrest and revealed in court this week shed new light on the steps he may have taken — or planned to take — to avoid capture after UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s killing last year. The notes, including a hand-drawn map and tactics for surviving on the lam, were shown on Monday at a pretrial hearing as Mangione’s bid to prevent prosecutors from using evidence seized during his Dec. 9, 2024, arrest at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Police said they discovered the notes in Mangione’s backpack, along with a 9 mm handgun that prosecutors said matches the one used to kill Thompson five days earlier.

Storms bring heavy rain to the Pacific Northwest, snow and freezing rain to the Upper Midwest

SUMMARY: The first of a series of powerful storms is dumping heavy rain and swelling rivers in the Pacific Northwest, closing roads and prompting high water rescues. Residents in parts of Oregon and Washington are grappling with power outages, flooding and school closures on Tuesday, while drivers are navigating debris and water that has closed roads and submerged vehicles. Fire officials northeast of Seattle say crews used inflatable kayaks to rescue several people trapped by rising water. And forecasters warn the worst was still to come, with some major rivers expected to crest later in the week.

AP Breakthrough Entertainer: Arden Cho seizes her golden moment after Hollywood heartbreak

SUMMARY: Three years ago, Arden Cho was ready to walk away from acting. She’d landed her first lead role in the Netflix series “Partner Track” only to see it canceled after one season. Now, Cho is one of The Associated Press’ Breakthrough Entertainers of 2025 after voicing the lead character Rumi in Netflix’s animated summertime hit “KPop Demon Hunters.” It’s become the most-streamed movie on the platform and spawned inescapable earworms “Golden” and “Soda Pop” as its soundtrack dominated pop charts. Cho calls it her “golden moment.” She has multiple film projects lined up for next year.

Pacific Northwest braces for more heavy rain after a powerful storm caused flooding and rescues

SUMMARY: Pacific Northwest residents are bracing for another round of heavy rain after a powerful storm clobbered the region the day before. The National Weather Service says rivers across the western part of Washington were on the rise Wednesday and some areas in the Cascade mountain range reported rain rates near or exceeding a half-inch per hour. A storm on Tuesday caused power outages, flooding and school closures in parts of Oregon and Washington. Drivers had to navigate debris slides and water that closed roads and submerged vehicles. Fire officials northeast of Seattle say crews used inflatable kayaks to rescue several people trapped by rising water.

US–Election 2026-Redistricting

Opponents of Trump-backed redistricting in Missouri submit a petition to force a public vote

SUMMARY: Opponents of Missouri’s new congressional map have submitted thousands of petition signatures calling for a statewide vote on the plan backed by President Donald Trump. Organizers of the petition drive said they turned in more than 300,000 signatures Tuesday to the secretary of state’s office. That’s well more than the roughly 110,000 signatures needed to suspend the U.S. House districts from taking effect until a public vote can be held next year. But the signatures still must be formally verified by election authorities. Republicans hope the new voting districts could help their party win additional seats in Congress in next year’s midterm elections.

TX–Schools-Turning Point Partnership

Texas launches plan to open Turning Point USA chapters in every high school

SUMMARY: Texas has launched a partnership with Turning Point USA to create chapters of the right-wing organization on every high school campus in the state. Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Turning Point USA Senior Director Josh Thifault revealed the initiative during a news conference on Monday. They did not outline any plans that would require schools to initiate the clubs, but Abbott said that he expects “meaningful disciplinary action” to take place against “any stoppage of TPUSA in the great state of Texas.” The partnership marks the latest attempt by Republican officials to push education further to the right, after years of them accusing public schools of indoctrinating students with left-leaning beliefs.

FBN–Behind the Call

Kevin Stefanski and Andy Reid both make head-scratching fourth-quarter decisions that lead to losses

SUMMARY: Kevin Stefanski has chosen Shedeur Sanders as the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback for the season’s final stretch. On Sunday, Sanders led the Browns with four touchdown drives and 364 passing yards. However, he was on the sideline during a crucial 2-point conversion attempt against Tennessee. The Browns lost the chance to tie when a Wildcat formation play failed. Stefanski took responsibility for the decision. Sanders expressed a desire to have the ball in his hands during critical moments. Meanwhile, Kansas City’s Andy Reid faced criticism for a risky fourth-down call that contributed to the Chiefs’ loss to Houston.

10 months after Super Bowl, Mahomes and Hurts struggle in historic week of turnovers

SUMMARY: Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts have had a rough week, marking a first in NFL history. Mahomes threw three interceptions and no touchdowns in the Chiefs’ 20-10 loss to Houston, ending Kansas City’s nine-year division title streak. Hurts threw four interceptions and lost a fumble in the Eagles’ 22-19 overtime loss to the Chargers. This is the first time both Super Bowl quarterbacks from the previous season threw at least three interceptions and no touchdowns in the same week. Mahomes’ performance was the worst for a Chiefs QB since 2010, and Hurts made history with two turnovers on the same play.
