US–Trump’s Big Bill States
Trump’s big bill is prompting urgent action in some Democratic states, but not in Republican ones
SUMMARY: New Mexico lawmakers are convening in a special session this week to boost funding for food assistance and rural health care. The Democratic governor says action is needed because of President Donald Trump’s big bill that cuts taxes and spending. The Democratic-led states of Colorado and California also have taken action to counteract Trump’s big bill. But Republican-led states have not. The differing responses highlight a partisan divide over Trump’s signature legislative accomplishment and its economic consequences. All states are likely to see some impact from the bill, but major Medicaid and food stamp changes don’t kick in until future years.

Iowa revokes license of schools superintendent arrested by ICE, saying he is in US illegally
SUMMARY: A state agency revoked the professional license of the leader of Iowa’s largest school district on Monday, days after he was detained on accusations that he was living and working in the country illegally. The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners said in a letter to Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Ian Roberts that he was ineligible to hold a license because “you no longer possess legal presence in the United States.” U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Roberts on Friday, saying he was subject to a removal order that a judge issued in May 2024. Roberts is a native of Guyana who entered the United States on a student visa in 1999. He’s being held at an Iowa jail.

Where states stand in the battle for partisan advantage in redrawing US House maps
SUMMARY: Missouri has become the third state to embrace a mid-decade redesign of its U.S. House districts in a quest for partisan advantage. Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe on Sunday signed into law a new redistricting plan urged by President Donald Trump that could help Republicans win an additional seat in next year’s elections. That comes after similar actions by lawmakers in Republican-led Texas and Democratic-led California. The California plan still needs voter approval. And opponents in Missouri are pursuing a referendum petition seeking to force a statewide vote on the revised map. Other states also are considering taking up redistricting.

US — Officer Killed-Western Kansas
A western Kansas police officer was fatally shot responding to a domestic violence call
SUMMARY: Authorities say a western Kansas police officer was fatally shot while responding to a domestic violence call at the home of a suspect. The man appeared to have killed himself. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says 32-year-old Hays Police Sgt. Scott Heimann died early Sunday after being transported by air to a hospital. He is the fourth Kansas law enforcement officer to die on duty in a little more than three months. The KBI says Heimann and a Kansas Highway patrol trooper were setting up a police perimeter near the suspect’s home at about 2 a.m. Sunday when a single shot fired from inside hit Heimann.

US-Election 2026-Redistricting
Missouri governor signs Trump-backed plan aimed at helping Republicans win another US House seat
SUMMARY: Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe has signed a new congressional map into law that gives Republicans an improved shot at winning an additional U.S. House seat. The mid-decade redistricting is part of President Donald Trump’s plan to try to hold on to Republicans’ slim majority in next year’s congressional elections. But opponents are leading a referendum petition to try to force a statewide vote on the new map. Republicans currently hold six of Missouri’s eight U.S. House seats. The revised map targets a district represented by Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver by splitting off segments and stretching the remainder of the district into Republican-heavy rural areas.

US–Austin-Yogurt Shop Murders
Police outline how DNA, ballistics evidence led to dead man as likely killer of girls in yogurt shop
SUMMARY: Austin police outlined how a new, rapidly unfolding DNA and ballistics evidence trail led them to declare a dead man as the likely perpetrator in the killing of four teenage girls at an Austin yogurt shop in 1991. Officials noted Monday that there was no known connection between the new suspect and the two men previously convicted in the killings, one of whom was briefly sent to death row. Austin police now say all evidence leads to Robert Eugene Brashers, who killed himself in a 1999 standoff with law enforcement. He has since then been linked to several killings and rape in other states.

CSX railroad replaces CEO after investor pressure and poor performance as Union Pacific merger looms
SUMMARY: CSX railroad replaced its CEO less than two months after an investment fund urged it to either find another railroad to merge with to better compete with the proposed transcontinental Union Pacific railroad or fire outgoing CEO Joe Hinrichs. The outgoing CEO came to the railroad in 2022 after a long career with Ford and focused on repairing CSX’s relationship with its unions after a bitter contract fight. But Ancora Holdings said CSX’s performance deteriorated under Hinrichs. Hinrichs resigned to clear the way for Steve Angel to become CEO.
