US–Immigration-Crime Victims

After rescinding protections, ICE is moving to deport more immigrants who were victims of crime

SUMMARY: A man detained by authorities days after he nearly died in an Iowa shooting is one of a growing number of crime victims who have been targeted in the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration. Felipe de Jesus Hernandez Marcelo was shot in June during an attempted robbery in Muscatine, Iowa, and has been detained since he got out of the hospital. In January, Immigration and Customs Enforcement rescinded a policy that had shielded many victims from detention and removal. The number of people applying for visas that allow some victims and their families to remain in the country has plummeted since then. Others have been detained unexpectedly by ICE as they go through the lengthy application process.

Trump wouldn’t call Minnesota governor after Democrat was slain but now blames him for raised flags

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump says he would have ordered flags lowered to half-staff after the assassination of a Minnesota Democratic state lawmaker if the governor had asked, but Trump at the time refused to even call the governor. On Monday, Trump was questioned about why he lowered flags for conservative activist Charlie Kirk but not for former Democratic state House Speaker Melissa Hortman, who was killed in June. Trump said he would have acted if Minnesota’s governor had requested it. However, Trump previously refused to call the governor, dismissing it as a “waste of time.”

US–Election 2026-Minnesota Governor

Tim Walz, the 2024 Democratic VP candidate, says he’ll seek a third term as Minnesota’s governor

SUMMARY: Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz says he’ll seek reelection to a third term in the 2026 elections. He’s hoping to beat the odds to become the longest-serving governor in a state where voters have usually said two terms were plenty. Walz was picked by then-Vice President Kamala Harris to be her running mate on the 2024 Democratic ticket. He’s been a sharp critic of President Donald Trump since then. In a campaign video posted on YouTube, Walz said he’s running because his work isn’t done and he wants to make Minnesota a place where everyone has a chance to succeed.

Target steps up next-day parcel delivery as discounter tries to narrow gap with rivals

SUMMARY: Target is expanding its next-day delivery of parcel shipments to 35 of the nation’s top 60 metropolitan markets by the end of next month, marking 22 new cities this year, as the discount retailer aims to narrow the gap with the likes of Amazon. That means that its next-day delivery expansion will go to 54% of the U.S. population, up from 20%, according to Gretchen McCarthy, Target’s chief supply chain and logistics officer. San Diego and Orlando and Tampa, Florida are on the list. Target plans to add 20 more cities for next-day delivery by next year. In comparison, online behemoth Amazon expanded the number of same-day delivery sites by more than 60% in 2024 for its Amazon Prime members, and serves more than 140 metro areas.

US–Minneapolis Shooting-Homeless Camp

More than a dozen injured in Minneapolis shootings at homeless camp and near transit station

SUMMARY: Eight people have been injured in a shooting at a homeless camp in Minneapolis, with four in critical condition. The incident happened Monday night, just hours after another shooting nearby left five injured. Police say no arrests have been made in either case. The homeless camp is located on private property and has been at the center of a legal battle between the owner and city officials. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey announced plans to clear the camp after the investigation. The property owner criticized the city’s response, calling for more support for those affected by the violence.

US–UnitedHealthcare-CEO Killed

New York judge tosses terrorism charges against Luigi Mangione, lets murder count stand

SUMMARY: A judge has dismissed terrorism charges against Luigi Mangione in New York state’s case over the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, but he kept the state’s second-degree murder charges against him. Judge Gregory Carro ruled Tuesday that although there is no doubt that the killing was not an ordinary street crime, New York law doesn’t consider something terrorism simply because it was motivated by ideology. The ruling came as Mangione made his first court appearance in the state case since February. The 27-year-old Ivy League graduate has attracted a cult following as a stand-in for frustrations with the health insurance industry after Thompson was fatally shot in Manhattan in December.

US–Election Misinformation-Oklahoma Schools

Oklahoma court stops social studies standards with 2020 election misinformation from taking effect

SUMMARY: The Oklahoma Supreme Court is putting on hold proposed new social studies standards for K-12 public school students that include conspiracy theories about the 2020 election. The state’s high court issued a temporary stay on Monday while a lawsuit challenging the new standards is being litigated. The court’s order directs the State Department of Education to keep the previous social studies standards in place while the case is being decided. At the direction of state Superintendent Ryan Walters, the standards were revised to include language about the 2020 election and that the source of the COVID-19 virus was a Chinese lab.

Steelers rookie Kaleb Johnson will watch from the bench after kick-returning flub

SUMMARY: Kaleb Johnson’s mistake in Pittsburgh’s loss to Seattle has cost him his role as kick returner. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says Johnson is off special teams in the “short term” following a pivotal miscue against the Seahawks when Johnson failed to chase after a live ball, leading directly to a Seattle touchdown. Tomlin believes in Johnson’s talent and plans to give him a chance to recover from the error. Johnson, a third-round pick, was averaging 23.9 yards per return before the incident. Pittsburgh faces challenges with injuries in their defense as they prepare to play New England next week.

FBN–Chiefs Analysis

The Chiefs’ 0-2 start is about as concerning as Patrick Mahomes leading the team in rushing

SUMMARY: Patrick Mahomes has been the Kansas City Chiefs’ leading rusher in their first two games, raising concerns about their offense. The Chiefs have started the season 0-2, losing to the Chargers and the Eagles. Mahomes has been forced to run because of offensive struggles, including injuries and suspensions affecting key players. Suspect in Seattle home invasions of Macklemore and celebrity athletes pleads not guilty

SUMMARY: A man accused of breaking into the homes of Seattle-area celebrities and pepper-spraying people he encountered inside has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges. He appeared in court on robbery charges related to the violent robbery of musician Macklemore’s home in June. Patrick Maisonet was arrested in August on unrelated robbery charges and pleaded not guilty. Police say Maisonet and accomplices used bear spray on Macklemore’s 22-year-old nanny before stealing sports memorabilia. He’s also charged with the violent break-in at Ichiro Suzuki’s home in February and football player Richard Sherman, in March. Other alleged burglaries occurred while celebrity athletes were away.

Problems officiating the tush push could be the new argument to support banning it

SUMMARY: The Super Bowl rematch turned into bully ball highlighted by the NFL’s ugliest play. Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and the Philadelphia Eagles pushed — literally — their way past Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, 20-17, on Sunday. Hurts scored a touchdown on a tush push and the Eagles used the play seven times to help hand the Chiefs their first three-game losing streak with Mahomes and send them to their first 0-2 start since 2014. Vikings feel the growing pains with young quarterback J.J. McCarthy after flop vs. Falcons

SUMMARY: The Minnesota Vikings have a lot of work to do on offense this week after more struggles on that side of the ball. New quarterback J.J. McCarthy had a rough game in the home opener after a three-touchdown rally in the fourth quarter of his debut. The Vikings moved inside the 20-yard line only once in the 22-6 loss to Atlanta. Now McCarthy is expected to miss the next game at Cincinnati because of a sprained ankle. Coach Kevin O’Connell said the decision won’t be performance-related. The Vikings were disappointed by how little support they provided McCarthy on Sunday.

FBN–Vikings-Injuries

Vikings QB McCarthy’s sprained ankle will keep him out for next game vs. Burrow-less Bengals

SUMMARY: Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy will likely miss the next game with a sprained ankle, according to coach Kevin O’Connell. McCarthy didn’t miss any game time during Minnesota’s 22-6 loss to Atlanta. He passed an initial medical evaluation and got his foot taped for extra support after the injury occurred late in the third quarter. The ankle pain worsened overnight, O’Connell said, and the decision to sideline McCarthy for the game against Cincinnati this Sunday was not performance-related. 5 years later, Carson Wentz can throw to Justin Jefferson

SUMMARY: Carson Wentz finally gets to throw to Justin Jefferson five years and five teams later. J.J. McCarthy’s ankle injury opens the door for the Wentz-to-Jefferson combination that Philadelphia Eagles fans desperately wanted to see in 2020. Now, it’ll happen for the Minnesota Vikings. Several other NFL teams could be turning to backup quarterbacks in Week 3. The Bengals won’t have Joe Burrow for a few months. The Commanders may not have Jayden Daniels.
