US–Disaster Declarations

Trump approves federal disaster aid for storms and flooding in 6 states

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has approved federal disaster aid for six states and tribes following storms and floods this spring and summer. The disaster declarations, announced Thursday, will provide federal funding to Kansas, North Carolina, North Dakota, and Wisconsin, as well as tribes in Montana and South Dakota. In most cases, it took Trump over a month to approve the aid requests, continuing a trend of longer waits for disaster relief. An Associated Press analysis shows delays in approving federal disaster aid have grown over time. The White House says Trump is providing a more thorough review of requests.

US–Election 2025-Decision Notes-Minnesota

AP Decision Notes: What to expect in the Minnesota House special election

SUMMARY: Control of the Minnesota House of Representatives will once again be at stake Tuesday in a special election to replace Melissa Hortman, the former Democratic state House speaker who was slain along with her husband at their home in June. The election takes place three months after the fatal shootings. The shooting suspect faces federal and state murder charges that could result in the federal death penalty.  Republicans now hold a 67-66 edge in the state House. If Democrats hold Hortman’s seat in the heavily Democratic district, the chamber will once again be tied at 67 seats.

US–Nebraska Detention Center

Nebraska plan for an immigrant detention center faces backlash and uncertainty

SUMMARY: Some Nebraska lawmakers and residents say the Republican governor’s plan to convert a prison into an immigration detention center has come with few details about the transition. The governor’s office offered the facility to federal officials for holding 200 to 300 detainees, nicknaming it the the “Cornhusker Clink” in line with other centers like “Alligator Alcatraz” in Florida. The current staff will be retrained, and the state expects federal reimbursement for conversion costs. Concerns have been raised, however, about overcrowding and the governor’s authority to offer up a state prison for federal use without legislative approval. The facility is expected to begin housing detainees in October.

US–Funeral Home-Corpse Abuse

Colorado funeral director who acknowledged abusing 191 corpses withdraws guilty plea

SUMMARY: A Colorado funeral home owner who acknowledged abusing 191 corpses has withdrawn his guilty plea. The move by defendant Jon Hallford during a Friday court hearing comes after a judge rejected a plea agreement in the case. The agreement called for 20 years in prison for Hallford. But family members of those whose bodies were found wanted a longer sentence. For years, Hallford and his wife, Carie, ran a fraudulent scheme from their Return to Nature Funeral Home while maintaining a lavish lifestyle. He’s already been sentenced to federal prison on fraud charges. A trial in the corpse abuse case is set for next February.
