US–RENTAL SOFTWARE-COLORADO VETO
Colorado’s governor vetoes landmark ban on rent-setting algorithms
SUMMARY: Democratic Gov. Jared Polis has vetoed a bill that would have made Colorado the first state to ban landlords from using rent-setting algorithms. Critics say real estate software company RealPage’s products have helped landlords coordinate to hike rental prices. In a veto letter Thursday, Polis said he understands the intent of the bill but that any collusion among landlords would already be in violation of existing law. At least six cities have passed similar ordinances at the local level over the past year. RealPage has vehemently denied any claims of collusion. It says its products help stabilize the rental market and often recommend that landlords drop their rents.

US–ENBRIDGE PIPELINE
Army Corps analysis finds Great Lakes pipeline tunnel would have sweeping environmental impacts
SUMMARY: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has released a draft analysis of the environmental effects of building a protective tunnel around an aging Enbridge oil pipeline running beneath a channel connecting two Great Lakes. The analysis found construction could result in the permanent loss of wetlands and bat habitat, disturb aquatic wildlife and degrade roads from truck traffic. However, the tunnel would eliminate the change of boat anchors rupturing the pipeline. The clock now starts on a 30-day comment period ahead of a final analysis. That’s the last step before the corps issues a permit. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel are suing to stop the project.

US-CANADA-WILDFIRE-AIR-QUALITY-MIDWEST
Winds push smoke from Canadian wildfires south into US and compromise air quality
SUMMARY: Air quality in some parts of the United States is being compromised as smoke from dozens of wildfires in Canada travels south, pushed by winds high in the atmosphere. The Environmental Protection Agency’s AirNow page lists air quality in Arrowhead, Minnesota, as unhealthy for people and animals sensitive to pollution and other airborne particles. Moderate air quality is being reported across other parts of northeastern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin, the Chicago area, southwestern Michigan and the state’s eastern Upper Peninsula, northern Indiana and western Ohio. National Weather Service meteorologist Patrick Ayd says that over the next day or so, particulates from the burning trees, leaves and other vegetation could reach further south into Oklahoma, Tennessee and Arkansas.

US–EX-POLICE-CHIEF-PRISON-ESCAPE
Bloodhounds hunting ‘Devil in the Ozarks’ fugitive are seen as key part of manhunt
SUMMARY: Authorities say a bloodhound picked up Grant Hardin’s scent shortly after prison guards learned that he’d slipped past a gate. But the dog lost the scent as heavy rains blew through the area on Sunday. That meant the inmate known as the ‘Devil in the Ozarks’ could have gone in any direction. Despite that early failure, experts say bloodhounds are playing a key role in the search for Hardin, now in its sixth day. They have clothing and other items Hardin left behind, which is used to give the hounds the scent they will search for.
