US–ISRAELI EMBASSY-STAFFERS KILLED-FUNERAL
Kansas community holds private memorial for Israeli Embassy staffer killed in DC ambush
SUMMARY: Family, friends and religious figures lauded the life of one of the Israeli Embassy staffers fatally shot in Washington, D.C., last week during her funeral Tuesday in the Kansas community where she grew up. The private funeral for 26-year-old Sarah Milgrim was held at Congregation Beth Torah in Overland Park, Kansas — the temple she attended during her high school years. Milgrim was leaving a reception for young diplomats at the Capital Jewish Museum alongside 30-year-old Yaron Lischinsky on May 21 when they were shot to death. Lischinsky had bought an engagement ring before the shooting and was planning to propose to Milgrim in the coming days.

US–MEASLES OUTBREAK-EXPLAINER
US measles case count climbs slightly to 1,046 cases, while Indiana’s outbreak ends
SUMMARY: The U.S. is up to 1,046 confirmed measles cases. Texas added 10 cases in the past week, further signaling slowing of the nation’s largest outbreak. Two elementary school-aged children and an adult have died from measles-related illnesses this year. Other states with active outbreaks include Michigan, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. Indiana said its outbreak is over. Measles is caused by a highly contagious virus that’s airborne. It is preventable through vaccines, and has been considered eliminated from the U.S. since 2000.

US–SPELLING BEE
To win the Scripps National Spelling Bee, contenders must also master geography
SUMMARY: There are times when the Scripps National Spelling Bee transforms into a geography bee. Scripps has begun relying on obscure geographical terms to winnow down the field of spellers in the later rounds. While the words are included in the Merriam-Webster Unabridged dictionary, they often don’t follow familiar roots or language patterns. That denies accomplished spellers of the tools they use to figure out how to spell words they’ve never seen before. Some spellers say the best way to deal with geographical names is just to memorize them. The National Spelling Bee began Tuesday and concludes Thursday at a convention center outside Washington.

Manhunt launched for ex-police chief known as ‘Devil in the Ozarks’ after his escape from prison
SUMMARY: Authorities are searching Arkansas’ rugged Ozark Mountains for a former police chief and convicted killer who escaped from prison this weekend. The sister of one of his victims is on edge. Cheryl Tillman’s brother was killed by Grant Hardin. She told The Associated Press that said she and other relatives are worried since they were witnesses in his court proceedings. Hardin is the former police chief in the small town of Gateway near the Arkansas-Missouri border. He was serving lengthy sentences for murder and rape and became known as the “Devil in the Ozarks.” Prison officials say he escaped from prison Sunday in Calico Rock.

US–ABORTION-MISSOURI
Abortions canceled again in Missouri after ruling from state Supreme Court
SUMMARY: Planned Parenthood is halting abortions in Missouri again after a ruling from the state Supreme Court. The decision on Tuesday is part of a tumultuous legal saga. Voters struck down the state’s abortion ban last November. The state’s top court ruled that a district judge applied the wrong standard in rulings in December and February. Those rulings allowed abortions to resume in the state for the first time since they were nearly completely halted. The ban had taken effect after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. In Tuesday’s ruling, the court ordered the judge to vacate her earlier orders and reevaluate the case.
