US-XGR–WALZ-MINNESOTA BUDGET

Walz contrasts Minnesota’s bipartisan budget breakthrough with Washington’s deep divisions

SUMMARY: Gov. Tim Walz and leaders of the Minnesota Legislature have announced a hard-fought budget deal. They used the occasion Thursday to contrast the bipartisan cooperation that produced the agreement with the deep divisions in Washington. The Democratic governor and former vice presidential candidate says legislative leaders from both parties came up with a fiscally responsible, balanced budget. The Minnesota House is tied and Senate Democrats hold just a one-vote majority. Those razor-thin margins mean at least some bipartisan support is needed to get anything enacted. Walz hasn’t announced yet whether he will seek re-election. Nor has he ruled out a presidential run.

US–TRUMP TARIFFS-SOYBEAN FARMERS

Farmers weigh Trump’s trade war like they watch the weather, waiting to see how things go

SUMMARY: Farm country voted heavily for Donald Trump last November. Now many farmers are taking a wait-and-see attitude toward the Republican president’s disputes with China and other international markets. More than half of U.S. soybeans are exported internationally, with roughly half of those going to China, so it’s a critical market. Monday’s announcement of a 90-day truce between the two countries backed up the reluctance of many farmers to hit the panic button. More good news came in an updated forecast from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that predicted somewhat lower soybean exports but higher domestic consumption, resulting in higher prices. Soybean futures surged, though time will tell whether those hopes are justified.

US–SUPER BOWL REPORTER DEATH–CHARGES

Woman accused in Super Bowl reporter’s death gets 25 years in unrelated case

SUMMARY: A woman facing a second-degree murder charge for the death of a Super Bowl television reporter has been sentenced to 25 years in an unrelated case on Thursday. Danette Colbert, 48, had previously been given a suspended sentence by an Orleans Parish judge last year after being convicted of theft and fraud charges. Louisiana’s Attorney General Liz Murrill convinced the judge that Colbert, who had prior felony convictions involving fraud, was a habitual offender who deserved a harsher sentence. Colbert also faces second-degree murder charges for the death of Adan Manzano, a 27-year-old reporter who suffocated on his pillow after ingesting alcohol and the depressant Xanax.

US–HOMELAND SECURITY-COAST GUARD-NEW JET

Homeland Security looks to buy a new $50M jet for secretary and Coast Guard officials

SUMMARY: The Department of Homeland Security wants to spend $50 million to buy a new long-range Gulfstream jet, replacing one used by Secretary Kristi Noem and top Coast Guard and DHS officials. The funding request came up during a House appropriations subcommittee meeting Wednesday. Funding would come from the Coast Guard’s 2025 fiscal year budget. Democratic Rep. Lauren Underwood of Illinois said she was “horrified” by the proposal, noting Noem has another Gulfstream to use. Adm. Kevin Lunday says the Coast Guard operates two military long-range command and control aircraft and the one being replaced is more than 20 years old.
