US–DEMOCRATS-BUTTIGIEG

Buttigieg gives a strident anti-Trump message in Iowa and shows signs that he’s grown up

SUMMARY: Pete Buttigieg returns to Iowa for an event focused on veterans, six years after he burst onto the national political stage with a strong run ahead of the state’s leadoff presidential caucuses. Buttigieg is an ex-intelligence officer in the Navy Reserves who served in Afghanistan. The former South Bend, Indiana, mayor will headline a Tuesday town hall sponsored by the Democratic political organization VoteVets, which is focusing on President Donald Trump’s cuts to federal agencies and how they affect veterans. Buttigieg moved to Michigan but turned down runs for its open U.S. Senate and governor’s races. Buttigieg aides say his Iowa trip is for hearing people’s concerns, not just as an exercise to set up a presidential bid.

US–IOWA FIREWORKS-TRUMP

With Trump’s plans for America’s 250th in mind, Iowa lawmakers don’t want cities to limit fireworks

SUMMARY: Iowa lawmakers want President Donald Trump to know that their state is eager to be at the center of next year’s celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday and shares his vision of fireworks filling the skies. They’re so eager that they don’t want local officials blocking any impromptu neighborhood fireworks displays. The Republican-controlled Legislature passed a bill this week that would ban local limits on people setting off their own fireworks on July 3 or 4, or Dec. 31. There was nothing to stop big, public shows, but several cities in Iowa haven’t allowed people to shoot them off, even on the nation’s birthday or New Year’s Eve.

US–MEASLES OUTBREAK-EXPLAINER

The US has 1,001 measles cases and 11 states with active outbreaks

SUMMARY: The U.S. is up to 1,001 confirmed measles cases. Texas continues to confirm fewer cases in what’s now a nearly four-month outbreak, though the state still accounts for the vast majority of cases in the U.S. The Texas outbreak also spread measles to New Mexico, Oklahoma and Kansas. Three people, including two elementary school-aged children, have died from measles-related illnesses this year. Other states with active outbreaks include Indiana, Michigan, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. Measles is caused by a highly contagious virus that’s airborne. It is preventable through vaccines, and has been considered eliminated from the U.S. since 2000.

US–TRUMP-FEDERAL FUNDING CONDITIONS

20 Democratic attorneys general sue Trump administration over conditions placed on federal funds

SUMMARY: A coalition of 20 state Democratic attorneys general say that the Trump administration is threatening to withhold billions of dollars in transportation and disaster-relief funds unless states agree to certain immigration enforcement actions. The attorneys general filed two federal lawsuits Tuesday. According to the complaints, both Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy have threatened to cut off funding to states that refuse to comply with President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda. An official with the Department of Homeland Security said the lawsuits will not prevent Trump from “restoring the rule of law,” while Duffy said the states want to continue breaking federal law.

US–TRUMP-PLANE-CONGRESS

Schumer is vowing to hold up Justice Department nominees for answers about luxury plane from Qatar

SUMMARY: Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer says he will hold up all Justice Department nominations on the Senate floor until he gets more answers about the free Air Force One replacement that President Donald Trump says would be donated by Qatar. Trump said this week that he wants to accept the $400 million plane, and that it would later be donated to a presidential library. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News on Monday that the details of the donation are still being worked out. Schumer said the plan “is not just naked corruption, it is also a grave national security threat.”

US–OBIT-KIT BOND

Sen. Kit Bond, whose mastery of pork-barrel spending benefitted his native Missouri, dies at 86

SUMMARY: Christopher “Kit” Bond, a Republican who brought billions of dollars in federal funding to Missouri during his four terms in the U.S. Senate and who was state’s the youngest person to be governor, died Tuesday. He was 86. Bond’s family told Gov. Mike Kehoe’s office that Bond died in St. Louis, but it didn’t disclose the cause, Gabby Picard, a spokesperson for the governor, said in an email. Kehoe ordered flags flown at half staff for the man he described as a “skilled statesman.” As a member of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, Bond secured federal money for big and small projects in Missouri, scoffing at government watchdog groups that considered him a master of pork-barrel spending.

US–MISSING INDIGENOUS-ALERT SYSTEM

Arizona governor signs ‘Emily’s Law’ to alert when Native Americans go missing

SUMMARY: Arizona’s governor has signed legislation to create an alert system for Native Americans who have gone missing in the state. The legislation was named after Emily Pike, a San Carlos Apache teen whose remains were found after she went missing earlier this year from her group home. The measure signed Tuesday by Gov. Katie Hobbs clears the way for the creation of system that will function like an Amber Alert. Similar legislation was signed earlier this year in New Mexico and North Dakota. Native American activists have been pushing to bring more awareness to unsolved cases involving disappearances and deaths across Indian Country.
