Deadly April rainfall in US South and Midwest was intensified by climate change, scientists say
SUMMARY: Human-caused climate change intensified deadly rainfall in Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas and other states in early April and made it more likely to occur. That’s according to an analysis from the World Weather Attribution group of scientists. A series of storms unleashed tornadoes and extreme rainfall in the central Mississippi Valley region and caused at least 24 deaths. Homes, roads and vehicles were inundated and 15 deaths were likely caused by the catastrophic floods. The analysis found a rainfall event of this intensity could occur in the region about once every 100 years but that it could become more frequent in the future unless the world rapidly slashes greenhouse gas emissions.
