US–AVIATION SAFETY
Feds vow to overhaul US air traffic control system while fixing problems at troubled Newark airport
SUMMARY: A deadly midair collision in January between a military helicopter and a commercial airliner, and several crashes since, have prompted officials to focus on fixing the nation’s outdated air traffic control system and hiring more controllers. They say doing so would help ensure safety and prevent the kind of problems that have plagued the Newark, New Jersey, airport since its radar system failed briefly last week. The Federal Aviation Administration is also working on a more immediate fix for the technology and staffing problems in Newark while a broader overhaul is in the works. A broader multibillion-dollar plan will be announced Thursday for long-overdue upgrades to the nation’s air traffic control system.

US–RACIST PLAYGROUND VIDEO-VIRAL FUNDRAISER
A woman who called a Black child a slur has raised a backlash but also thousands of dollars
SUMMARY: A video showing a Minnesota woman at a playground admitting to using a racist slur against a Black child has garnered millions of views. But what’s been equally appalling for some is that the Rochester woman has amassed $700,000 online for relocation expenses after saying she and her family have been harassed. The local NAACP, in turn, drew over $340,000 for a 5-year-old boy. The flurry of monetary contributions has reignited debates, such as whether racist language and attacks are becoming more permissible. Experts say this reaction is evidence of people being more open about racist beliefs and wanting to hit back at so-called cancel culture.

US–REAL ID
Most airports are operating smoothly on the first day of the REAL ID requirement
SUMMARY: Most airports around the United States operated smoothly as new REAL ID requirements took effect because travelers without the updated document were still allowed to move through security easily. Those without the IDs were given flyers informing them that going forward they would need to present “REAL ID or other acceptable form of identification for your next flight or you may expect delays.” REAL ID requirements for those flying within the U.S. began Wednesday after more than 20 years of delays. Many airports reported security checkpoint wait times of a few minutes on their websites.

US–TAX CUTS-MISSOURI
Missouri poised to become first U.S. state to exempt stock sale profits from income taxes
SUMMARY: Missouri is poised to become the first state to repeal a common tax on profits from stocks and real estate sales. Legislation passed Wednesday would exempt capital gains from Missouri’s individual income taxes starting this year and could also eventually eliminate the tax for corporations. Capital gains currently are taxed both by the federal government and by all states that impose an income tax. Supporters hope the tax repeal will boost investment and economic activity in Missouri and eventually spread to other states. But critics say it will primarily benefit the rich and leave less tax revenue available for public schools and state services.

US–RESTAURANT-PATIO CRASH
Drunken driver who plowed into Minnesota restaurant patio, killing 2, pleads guilty to murder
SUMMARY: A man who was driving drunk when he crashed into a patio at a popular restaurant, killing two people and injuring nine others, has pleaded guilty to murder and other charges. Under his plea deal, 56-year-old Steven Frane Bailey agreed Wednesday to a sentence of 25 to 30 years. His sentencing is scheduled for July 28. Prosecutors say Bailey already had five drunken driving convictions on his record before he drove into the crowded patio at the Park Tavern in the Minneapolis suburb of St. Louis Park last September. His blood-alcohol level was more than four times the legal limit.

US–INMATE KILLED-DEATH PENALTY
Feds to seek death penalty for federal inmate charged with murdering his cellmate
SUMMARY: Federal prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty for an inmate accused of strangling his cellmate at the Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City. A notice of intent to seek the death penalty was filed Wednesday against 27-year-old Jasper Reed. A federal grand jury in Oklahoma City on Tuesday returned a three-count indictment charging Reed with first-degree murder, attempted murder and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. Prosecutors allege Reed attacked and seriously injured his first cellmate on April 27, 2024, and then killed another cellmate about a week later. A message left Wednesday with Reed’s attorneys was not immediately returned.
