US–KANSAS HIGHWAY CRASH-8 DEAD

Teen basketball players were among those who died in a Kansas highway crash that killed 8

SUMMARY: Two teenage basketball players, a coach and a trainer from the Tulsa, Oklahoma, area were among eight people killed in a fiery head-on highway crash in eastern Kansas. Authorities said other victims in Sunday’s crash on a two-lane stretch of U.S. 169 about 60 miles southwest of Kansas City, Missouri, included three members of a St. Louis-area family. The Kansas Highway Patrol says the crash occurred when a southbound SUV carrying the basketball players and driven by the trainer collided with a northbound sedan with the three St. Louis-area family members as passengers. A third teenager from the Tulsa area survived and was hospitalized.

North Dakota is 11th US state with a measles outbreak. Here’s what to know

SUMMARY: North Dakota is the 11th state in the U.S. with a measles outbreak. The U.S. has 935 confirmed measles cases this year. That’s triple the amount seen in all of 2024. Two children and an adult have died from measles-related illnesses this year. Ten other states have active outbreaks: Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas. Measles is caused by a highly contagious virus that’s airborne and spreads easily when an infected person breathes, sneezes or coughs. It is prevented by vaccines. US–ST LOUIS-JAIL

St. Louis agrees to pay $4M to settle lawsuit alleging inhumane conditions at now-closed jail

SUMMARY: St. Louis has agreed to pay $4 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging that inmates at a former medium-security jail were housed in “inhumane conditions” that included rodent feces in food, infestations of bugs and snakes, and unbearable overcrowding. The nonprofit ArchCity Defenders announced the settlement on Tuesday as it filed a motion in federal court seeking authorization to begin notifying people who were incarcerated at the St. Louis Medium Security Institution that they could be eligible for damages. Demolition of the troubled jail, known as the Workhouse, began earlier this year.
