US–CARBON CAPTURE PIPELINE-IOWA

DESCRIPTION: A proposed carbon capture pipeline that would traverse through several Midwestern states could face another blow in Iowa as a dozen Republican state senators force the issue to a vote. Summit Carbon Solutions already saw a new hurdle to their estimated $8.9 billion, 2,500 mile (4,023-kilometer) project after South Dakota lawmakers advanced a new law prohibiting the use of eminent domain to acquire land for carbon capture pipelines. Now, 12 state Senators in Iowa told their Republican leaders that they will not vote on any budget bill, one of the last requirements of the Legislature before session can end, until they bring a House-approved bill to the floor.

AS–THAILAND-ROYAL DEFAMATION

Prosecutors in Thailand say they won’t pursue royal defamation case against US scholar

SUMMARY: Prosecutors in Thailand say they don’t intend to press charges against an American academic arrested for royal defamation. The offense is punishable by up to 15 years in prison. The arrest of Paul Chambers had drawn concern from the academic community as well as from the U.S. government. Chambers is a political science lecturer at a university in the country’s north. The decision not to prosecute the 58-year-old Oklahoma native doesn’t immediately clear him of the defamation charge for the offense known as “lèse majesté.” Police may still contest it. Chambers’ supporters say the case against him was based on a blurb that he didn’t write for a webinar in which he participated.
