US–Kansas Shooting
4 law enforcement officers shot in rural Kansas responding to domestic violence call
SUMMARY: Authorities in Kansas say four law enforcement officers have shot while responding to a domestic violence call at a home in a rural area south of Topeka. The incident occurred Saturday morning outside the small town of Carbondale. Authorities say a 22-year-old male suspect died of gunshot wounds at the scene. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says the suspect’s 77-year-old grandfather was wounded in the gunfire. He and the law enforcement officers are all expected to recover. Patrol Superintendent Erik Smith said officers had been on the scene less than 10 minutes when gunfire erupted. The wounded officers are three Osage County sheriff’s deputies and a patrol trooper.

US–Government Shutdown-Tribal Colleges
Tribal college leaders are uneasy about US financial commitments despite a funding increase
SUMMARY: Tribal citizens are among communities navigating the impacts of massive cuts in federal spending and the effects of the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. A funding increase for tribal colleges and universities before the shutdown was welcome news, but college leaders remain uneasy about the government’s financial commitments. Those federal dollars are part of some of the country’s oldest legal obligations. Tribal college and university presidents and Native American education advocates worry they could be further eroded and the passage of Indigenous knowledge they ensure will be threatened.

FBN–Staggering Chiefs
Forget winning the AFC West. Mahomes and Chiefs in danger of missing playoffs after loss to Broncos
SUMMARY: A 10th straight AFC West title is looking out of reach for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. At this point, the Chiefs aren’t even in position to make the playoffs. They fell to 5-5 with Sunday’s 22-19 loss to the Denver Broncos. Kansas City went 12-0 in one-score games last season. This year, they’re 0-5 in those games. The Chiefs hope to rely on their experience of going to five of the last six Super Bowls to spark a late-season surge. But they’ll need to go 5-2 over their final seven games just to reach double-digit wins.

US–Jets-Player Shot
New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd critically wounded in Manhattan shooting
SUMMARY: Multiple news outlets are reporting that New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd has been critically injured in a shooting in midtown Manhattan. The New York Police Department says a 29-year-old man shot early Sunday was taken to a hospital, where he was in critical but stable condition. There have been no arrests. The police didn’t name the victim, but multiple news outlets report that the man shot in the incident was Boyd. A Jets spokesperson says the team is “aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd.” Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list in August with a shoulder injury that required surgery to repair.

FBN–Bears-Vikings
Bears beat Vikings 19-17 with game-ending FG set up by Duvernay’s 56-yard kickoff return
SUMMARY: Devin Duvernay’s 56-yard kickoff return in the final minute for Chicago set up Cairo Santos for his fourth field goal of the game, a 48-yarder as time expired, to push the Bears past Minnesota 19-17 after the Vikings scored the go-ahead touchdown with 50 seconds left. After J.J. McCarthy ended another erratic performance with five straight completions culminating in a 15-yard scoring strike to Jordan Addison, Duvernay delivered. The Bears improved to 7-3 under new coach Ben Johnson after blowing a 13-point lead they took into the fourth quarter. The Vikings fell to 4-6 after two more interceptions by McCarthy.

FBN–Vikings-Erratic McCarthy
Vikings’ well-built, well-heeled offense remains off track as frustration rises in latest loss
SUMMARY: J.J. McCarthy struggled again for the Minnesota Vikings in a 19-17 loss to the Chicago Bears. McCarthy put plenty of touch, poise and confidence into the go-ahead drive he finished with a touchdown pass with 50 seconds left before a special teams lapse gave the Bears the opening they needed to pull out the victory. The body of work in McCarthy’s fifth career start left the Vikings with plenty of questions about how they can make this season any more than a developmental experience for the 10th pick in the 2024 draft.
