US–TRUMP-DOGE-AMERICORPS
AmeriCorps must restore grant funding and members to states that sued over cuts, federal judge rules
SUMMARY: A federal judge has issued a temporary block on the Trump administration’s cancellation of hundreds of millions of dollars in AmeriCorps grant funding and thousands of service workers in about two dozen states that sued in April. The decision means the federal agency must restore grant funding and corps members in those states. The federal lawsuit was filed by Democratic state officials across the country. It accused President Donald Trump’s cost-cutting efforts through the Department of Government Efficiency of reneging on grants funded through the AmeriCorps State and National program. The program was budgeted $557 million in congressionally approved funding this year. But the judge is allowing the 30-year-old federal agency to proceed with its reduction in force.

US–EX-POLICE-CHIEF-PRISON-ESCAPE
Marshals say ‘Devil in the Ozarks’ who escaped Arkansas prison has likely fled state
SUMMARY: A new federal court filing shows that investigators believe the convicted murderer and rapist known as the “Devil in the Ozarks” has likely fled Arkansas after escaping prison last month. A deputy U.S. marshal in a criminal complaint released this week cited two unconfirmed sightings of Grant Hardin, 56, who escaped from the Calico Rock prison May 25. One of those sightings was in southern Missouri. Authorities have said Hardin escaped prison by wearing an outfit designed to look like a law enforcement uniform. The filing was first reported by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

US–CONGRESS-TAX CUTS-THUNE
Thune’s first big test as Senate leader has arrived with Trump’s tax bill
SUMMARY: Only six months into the job, Senate Majority Leader John Thune faces a massive challenge as he tries to quickly pass President Donald Trump’s sprawling tax and spending cuts package. While most of his Republican senators are inclined to vote for it, Thune can still only lose four votes. To get it done by July 4, the well-liked South Dakota senator has to figure out how to balance the demands of different Republicans. It’s a complicated and risky undertaking, one that’s likely to make or break the first year of Thune’s tenure and his evolving relationship with Trump.
