US–MED–Infant Botulism-Formula Recall

ByHeart recalls all baby formula sold nationwide as infant botulism outbreak grows

SUMMARY: Baby formula manufacturer ByHeart recalled all of its products sold nationwide Tuesday. The move comes days after some batches were recalled amid an expanding outbreak of infant botulism. According to state and federal health officials, at least 15 babies in 12 states have been sickened in the outbreak since August, with more cases pending. All the infants were hospitalized after consuming ByHeart formula. Parents and caregivers who have the formula in their homes should immediately stop using it and dispose of the product. Babies with symptoms of infant botulism need immediate medical care.

US–Kansas-Newspaper Raid

A Kansas county agrees to pay $3 million and apologize over a raid on a small-town newspaper

SUMMARY: A rural Kansas county has agreed to pay more than $3 million and apologize over a law enforcement raid on a small-town weekly newspaper in 2023. Eric Meyer, editor and publisher of the Marion County Record, said Tuesday he hoped Marion County’s payment would deter similar actions against other news organizations in the future. The raid sparked an outcry over press freedom and prompted five federal lawsuits. County sheriff’s officers were involved in the raid and helped draft search warrants Marion city police used to enter the newspaper’s offices and other locations. Meyer’s 98-year-old mother, co-owner of the paper, died of a heart attack the next day, something the publisher blamed on the stress of the raid.

US-MED–Infant Formula-Botulism Recall-Explainer

A baby formula recall linked to an infant botulism outbreak is expanding. Here’s what to know

SUMMARY: ByHeart, which makes organic infant formula, has recalled all of its products sold throughout the U.S. amid a growing outbreak of infant botulism. A California health official says the outbreak, which started in August, has now sickened at least 15 infants in 12 states. No deaths have been reported. ByHeart officials say parents and caregivers who have the formula in their homes stop using it immediately and dispose of the product. The most recent cases were confirmed in November. US–Congressional Map-Utah

Judge adopts Utah congressional map creating a Democratic-leaning district for 2026

SUMMARY: A Utah judge has rejected a new congressional map drawn by Republican lawmakers. Judge Dianna Gibson adopted an alternate proposal giving Democrats a strong shot at flipping a seat in the 2026 midterm elections. Gibson ruled late Monday that the map approved by the Legislature last month unduly favors Republicans and disfavors Democrats. She ultimately selected a map drawn by voting rights groups that keeps Democratic-heavy Salt Lake County almost entirely within one district. Republicans hold all four of Utah’s U.S. House seats. The newly approved map gives Democrats a much stronger chance to flip a seat. The state last had a Democrat in Congress in early 2021.

US–Government Shutdown-Food Aid-What to Know

What to know about the status of SNAP food aid as a vote nears to end the shutdown

SUMMARY: Congress could soon resume food aid benefits that were paused at the start of November. How fast SNAP payments reach beneficiaries could vary by state. Some experts say it could be quicker in states that have not loaded debit cards with any benefits yet than in those that have provided partial payments. President Donald Trump’s administration halted payments for the program used by 1 in 8 Americans due to the government shutdown. It has been subject to seesawing legal decisions ever since. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Tuesday to keep on hold lower-court rulings that the government should immediately fully fund the program.

REL-US–Catholic Bishops

US Catholic bishops select conservative culture warrior to lead them during Trump’s second term

SUMMARY: U.S. Catholic bishops have elected Oklahoma City Archbishop Paul Coakley as their new president, choosing a conservative culture warrior to lead during President Donald Trump’s second term. The vote Tuesday serves as a barometer for the bishops’ priorities. In choosing Coakley, the bishops are doubling down on their conservative bent, even as they push for more humane immigration policies from the Trump administration. Coakley was seen as a strong contender for the top post, having already been elected in 2022 to serve as secretary, the No. 3 conference official. In three rounds of voting, he edged out centrist candidate Bishop Daniel Flores of Brownsville, Texas.

Kansas freshman Darryn Peterson misses game with hamstring injury

SUMMARY: Kansas freshman Darryn Peterson missed Tuesday night’s game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi due to a hamstring injury. Jayhawks coach Bill Self believes the injury won’t keep the potential NBA lottery pick out for long. The No. 25 Jayhawks still managed a 77-46 victory without Peterson, who was the top high school recruit. Peterson scored 21 points in his college debut and 22 against North Carolina but has faced cramping issues. Kohl Rosario stepped up with 16 points in Peterson’s absence. Kansas faces Princeton on Saturday and has upcoming games against Duke, Notre Dame and Syracuse.

No. 25 Kansas cruises without Peterson to 77-46 rout of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

SUMMARY: No. 25 Kansas bounced back from last week’s loss to North Carolina with a 77-46 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Kohl Rosario scored 16 points to help cover for the absence of freshman Darryn Peterson. Peterson, the nation’s top recruit, has been dealing with cramping issues. The Jayhawks held the Islanders to 32% shooting, winning their 22nd consecutive nonconference home game. Kansas was initially sluggish without Peterson, but Rosario’s performance helped the Jayhawks pull away. They face high-profile games against teams like Duke and UConn before Big 12 play begins.

Buffalo Bills add receiver depth by signing former Chiefs player Mecole Hardman to practice squad

SUMMARY: Unable to land a receiver at the NFL trade deadline last week, the Buffalo Bills turned to the free agent pool by signing Mecole Hardman to their practice squad.
