UPDATED EVENT: Tuesday, Nov. 04 Shutdown of federal government continues, equaling longest ever – Shutdown of U.S. federal government continues into its 35th day, equaling the longest ever shutdown in 2018-2019. Legislative impasse began after Democrats demanded the funding of health care benefits set to otherwise expire, while Republicans said the extension on the table is ‘clean’ and should therefore be accepted by both parties. * Shutdown likely furloughs federal employees from work, except those whose jobs ‘protect life and property’ who are expected to work without pay. Recent weeks have seen increasing disruption to air travel as rising numbers of air traffic controllers call in sick and SNAP benefits disrupted after the Department of Agriculture said funds had been exhausted. It also sees closures to federal facilities, and probably delays passport and visa applications and Medicare approvals
