US–IMMIGRANT GROUP-PRIVATE INFORMATION
Iowa immigrant group is alarmed by a state lawmaker’s demand for confidential information
SUMMARY: A state lawmaker has demanded that an Iowa immigrant rights organization turn over private details about the nonprofit’s legal clients, donors and list of members. Iowa Migrant Movement for Justice is warning its members of what they called intimidation from public officials amid a national crackdown on immigration. The directive dated Feb. 24 was sent by the chairman of the state House government oversight committee. An attorney for Iowa MMJ rejected the demand this month, saying it is not a legally valid request and suggesting the letter raises serious concerns about an abuse of process.

US–MINNEAPOLIS HOMICIDES
A Minneapolis shooting that left 3 dead and 2 wounded may be gang related, police say
SUMMARY: Minneapolis police say a late-night shooting that left three people dead and two others seriously injured may have been gang related. The killings followed a period of relative peace in Minneapolis. The city experienced an increase in crime during the COVID-19 pandemic and after the police killing of George Floyd. Police Chief Brian O’Hara told reporters Wednesday it was “very clear” that the victims were deliberately targeted and that the shootings late Tuesday were “potentially gang related.” But he added that investigators were still working to determine a motive. The chief said a wounded man was hospitalized in grave condition.

US–PAID SICK LEAVE
Voters resoundingly backed paid sick leave. Now lawmakers in 3 states want to roll back the benefits
SUMMARY: Voters in Alaska, Missouri and Nebraska overwhelmingly approved paid sick leave laws last year. Now some lawmakers in those states are trying to roll back the benefits before they begin. Republicans are pushing measures that would exempt small businesses. They contend that employers can’t afford the costs and that citizen activists who crafted the ballot measures overlooked the realities of running a business. Some workers who stand to benefit are upset by the potential revisions. The U.S. Labor Department says just 58% of employees in the bottom quarter of income earners receive paid sick leave, compared with 94% in the top quartile.

US–SEVERE WEATHER
Storm leaves 3 dead in Pennsylvania and about 500K customers without power
SUMMARY: Officials are reporting at least three deaths amid a storm system that downed trees and power lines and left about half a million customers in the dark across Pennsylvania, Ohio and neighboring states. The majority of the more than 500,000 outages Wednesday were reported in Pennsylvania. Police in State College say a man was electrocuted Tuesday while trying to put out a mulch fire near a utility pole. Pittsburgh officials say first responders were called to the South Side Slopes area for reports of a person electrocuted by live wires. A man also died when a tree fell on his home in Ross Township, just outside Pittsburgh.

US–PUBLIC RELIGIOUS SCHOOL-SUPREME COURT
Roberts might hold key Supreme Court vote over first publicly funded religious charter school
SUMMARY: Chief Justice John Roberts appears to hold the key vote over whether the Supreme Court will allow the nation’s first publicly funded religious charter school, in Oklahoma. Roberts was the only justice whose vote seemed in doubt after the court heard more than two hours of arguments Wednesday in a major culture-war clash involving the separation of church and state. Four other conservative justices seemed firmly on the side of the St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School and the state charter school board that approved it. The three liberal justices seemed just as likely to vote to affirm an Oklahoma Supreme Court ruling that held that the taxpayer-funded school would entangle church and state in violation of the First Amendment.

US–BIPARTISAN POLITICS-MONTANA
Montana Republicans dominated the 2024 election. How did Democrats gain power at the statehouse?
SUMMARY: Montana Republicans dominated in the fall election, but moderates in the party have shared power with Democrats in the statehouse. The move defied growing divisions between America’s two political parties nationally. Democrats banded with a handful of moderate Republicans to thwart GOP leaders’ efforts to make Montana’s judicial system more partisan. They also expanded Medicaid, raised teacher pay and passed a substantial state budget increase with shared priorities such as home health care. The cooperation may prove fleeting if elections in the Big Sky State continue mirroring national trends that have hardened party lines.
